Game Thread Texas at tOSU, Sat. Aug. 30th, 12pm ET, FOX

I have a feeling we are going to beat these guys worse than what’s expected.

I don’t believe they’ll be able to handle JJ et al and I especially don’t think they’ll know what to do with our defense that’s going to be a mystery to them (benefit of having a new coordinator).
I don't know much about what UT lost other than Ewers, but I do know the sports media cannot wait to crown Manning, so that loss (Ewers) isn't seen as a loss of personnel. I think that's a mistake, as I am decidedly NOT sold on Manning. Hey, he could end up being a great QB, but right now, he's a name on the back of his shirt.

These teams seem to have similar levels of talent. They played a close game in January and both lost a lot. Not much to go on.

My primary concern for this game is that Texas is not a slow-starting team with Sark. They appear to come out of training camp ready for the season. The Buckeyes have been a slow-starting team under Day. One might call last year an exception, but last year had a schedule tailor-made for a slow-starting team.

My primary source of optimism in this game is that Day appeared to grow as a coach last year. He made some mistakes, adjusted, and won a national championship.

My secondary source of optimism is Jeremiah Smith. Throw him the damn ball and they'll be fine.

Arch Manning is preparing to face Ohio State football, but maybe he won’t be the best QB in the game

The hype train for Texas quarterback Arch Manning is at full steam.

It started during his recruitment as a five-star prospect with that name. It built when he flashed potential across 27 offensive snaps as a freshman in 2023. It grew last year as he factored into a run to the College Football Playoff semifinals, starting two regular-season games in place of former Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers.

Then came the offseason.

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian wasted little time naming Manning the starter in 2025. At the Manning Passing Academy, he was the center of attention. On ESPN, he’s a frequent talking point.

“Arch Manning is the best college football quarterback we have seen since Tim Tebow entered the scene in 2006,” SEC football analyst Paul Finebaum said on ESPN’s “Get Up” earlier this month.

Perhaps this hype will be warranted. Texas should be a championship contender this season, and if Manning -- the nephew of NFL greats Peyton and Eli Manning -- plays anywhere near his level of expectations, he’ll be a Heisman candidate.

What if he’s not the best quarterback inside Ohio Stadium on Aug. 30, though?

There hasn’t been much national hype building around Ohio State’s quarterback situation, and some of that is due to coach Ryan Day not naming a starter yet. But many presume it’ll be Julian Sayin getting the nod after serving as the third option during his freshman campaign last year.

Sayin hasn’t been around college football for two years like Manning has, and he hasn’t earned a start like his Week 1 counterpart. However, he fits other notable criteria:
  • Sayin was a five-star prospect.
  • Sayin was the top quarterback in his recruiting class.
  • Sayin committed to and signed with an SEC program (Alabama) out of high school.

Who here would trade Sayin for Manning ?

I wouldn't. I do wish we were playing Texas in game 3, but these are the cards dealt.

Just one thing to do Mr. Sayin. Go out and put on a show that shuts the cockholster of Mr. Finebaum.

To me the biggest concern for OSU in this game is whether our defensive front seven can hold up physically in the interior and get the calls and run fits right to limit yardage and big plays from gash running plays, especially designed and improvised QB runs. Even if pressure on Manning isn't great, I'm much more concerned about that than about him ripping the defense up from the pocket. I think the Buckeyes' offense will put up at least 24 and agree with Jax that this feels like a big Max Klare game.

Sort of a unique game where our weaknesses matchup somewhat. They lost everyone on their OL and we lost a lot on the DL. We return maybe the best OL in the country and they have a good DL.

I think where the game will turn is our skill compared to theirs. Our secondary is better in my opinion and their secondary has to deal with the best skill position talent in the country.

That said, need to run the ball haha

Best OL in the country would be amazing but not sure I’m there yet. Hope you’re right as that would be huge for breaking in a new QB and RB corps. Certainly have the talent at the skill position to make a run if the OL is elite watch out!

Ryan Day admits what the challenge is that Ohio State is facing with the Texas Longhorns right around the corner

We are now less than six weeks away from the Ohio State Buckeyes opening their season by hosting Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns.

The Buckeyes are coming off a National Championship win over Notre Dame—a magical run that also included a victory over Texas.

This year’s team, however, will look quite a bit different. Ohio State is replacing a significant amount of talent that departed for the NFL—14 players were drafted, and the Buckeyes have upwards of 16 starters to replace.

Head coach Ryan Day recently opened up about one of the challenges facing the program

A program like Ohio State reloads year after year thanks to elite recruiting and savvy use of the transfer portal. Player development is at an all-time high, and the program is in great shape. Still, Day acknowledged that replacing leadership has been a challenge.

“It’s been going good. The guys have been working really hard this summer,” Day said via The Bobby Carpenter Show. “And I think that the biggest challenge has been the leadership—figuring out who the guys are that are going to step up. When you look at last year’s team, there are guys returning like Caleb Downs and Sonny Styles—guys who have been in some leadership roles in the past—but a lot of players now have to step into more prominent roles in that area.”

I feel like it’s been a good couple of months leading up to it. As you know, when (strength coach Mickey Marotti) gets to work with these guys, that’s really when the team bonds and forges together. So we know that August is going to be a huge month—and it’s right around the corner.”

Fortunately for Ohio State, they return star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith for his second season and standout safety Caleb Downs for his third. Arguably two of the best players in college football, their presence will certainly help ease the transition.

Other key returners like Sonny Styles, Carnell Tate, Davison Igbinosun, Caden Curry, and Kenyatta Jackson have been in the program long enough to emerge as team leaders as well.

Still disgusted it's a noon game. Even the Miami home game in 2010 was 3:30pm.

Oh well.

Can't tell if it's the state of how college football is anymore because of the playoffs; or maybe it's the shift away from discussion forums as a medium - but the 2005 thread had 7k replies and was dozens of pages longer by July compared to now. The 2006 thread tops that by quite a bit.

Texas visits for the first time in 20 years. Hoping the crowd at The Shoe' is up to the task so early in the day.
