Texas A&M suing Seattle over 12th Man

Poll Being Stacked By Aggies '12th Man'

SEATTLE -- KIROTV.com has presented our viewers with a poll, to see how they feel about the 12th man battle.

The poll was posted Monday morning and by Tuesday afternoon votes had reached record numbers with over 14,000 votes counted.

However, the voting process isn’t as evenly weighed as it may appear. Many viewers wrote in to inform KIROTV.com that the survey was being stacked.

A Texas A&M message board Texags.com has been encouraging Aggie fans to vote numerous times to prove to Seattle where the 12th man belongs.

One Aggie fan wrote “Just spent the last 30 minutes on a conference call and voted 84 times. WHOOOOOOOOP!!!!!!!”

And another fan wrote about his voting strategy, “I plan to vote 2x per hour today. 5 times so far.”
Aggy = pure entertainment. :biggrin:

Seahawks, A&M settle '12th Man' flap

Posted: Monday May 8, 2006 7:04PM; Updated: Monday May 8, 2006 7:08PM

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) -- The fight over the "12th Man" is over and both Texas A&M University and the Seattle Seahawks will be able to use the phrase.

The university and the Seahawks said Monday they had reached a deal settling the university's lawsuit over the phrase reserved for fans.
As part of the agreement, the Seahawks acknowledge Texas A&M's ownership rights of the trademark phrase. However, the NFL team may continue using it under license. Neither side admitted any fault or liability.

The Aggies hold trademark rights to the phrase "12th Man." In February, the university filed a lawsuit in Brazos County over the Seahawks use of the trademark. Days before Seattle faced the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl, a restraining order was issued calling on the Seahawks to halt any usage of "12th Man," or "12th Mania."

Origins of the term "12th man" aren't exactly clear, but the traditions in Seattle and College Station date back decades.

The Aggies trace their use to 1922, when an injury-plagued roster led the team to pull E. King Gill from the stands and suit him up to play. Gill never took to the field, but the legend strengthened campus-wide commitment to support the team. The words "Home of 12th Man" adorn the stadium and the entire school is considered the 12th Man.

The Seahawks retired the number 12 in 1984 to honor fans who made the old Kingdome one of the noisiest stadiums in football.

I originally thought this was a foolish issue but then got to thinking if a certain team starting using TBDBITL or Script Ohio, I'd be pissed and expect some sort of compensation for the team that originally came up with the name.

Yeah. I just thought that A&M were being little bitches, beforehand. However, that's actually a pretty cool story, and it's understandable that the university and its fans would take offense to another university or organization taking its phrase.
