The University of Akron apparently has found the man to assume the reins of its football program.
Sources confirmed to the Beacon Journal that Terry Bowden, son of Florida State coaching legend Bobby Bowden, will be named the new Zips football coach.
His selection came out of the blue given that speculation centered around others, including former Zips assistant and player Paul Winters, who withdrew his name earlier this week, along with Barberton native and current Temple University offensive coordinator Scott Loeffler, who declined the job, according to reports.
Bowden does, however, have ties to the program , however brief they were. He served as quarterbacks coach under coach Gerry Faust in 1986 before moving on to coach Samford University.
He will leave his current position coaching North Alabama in Florence, Ala., where he compiled a 29-9 record and three consecutive appearances in the Division II playoffs. He recently just signed a one-year extension to continue at the school.
