Pat Summitt has been diagnosed with early onset dementia, but will coach this season.

She's 59, has coached 37 years, with 8 national titles and 1,071 wins.

They day that happens to me is the day I announce my solo quest to cross the Atlantic from Cape Verde to Montserrat via kayak during hurricane season...

I'll bring a sat phone and transponder. No need to mess up the insurance pay out. :paranoid:

Mr. Ubet. I've got some bad news about your MRI.

Can I help you load your kayak? :groove:

I would've thought this might have been the (outgoing) men's coach instead. :so:

Very sad news. Dementia is awful. Prayers and thoughts to Coach Summitt's family.

It is awful. Happened to g-mother rather early in life - earlier than Summitt. My mom did not get it until her 70s. Not only is the personal tragedy of seeing a vibrant mind dimmed, but the effects of caring for a person with dementia take a toll emotionally and very much financially on a family. I was the son who had to put the Aricept and Namenda in her pill box every week and tried to check that she took it. There are some new drugs coming out, so I wish her the best with that effort.

I wish Pat Summitt the best, but am I the only one to wonder if the timing of her public announcement, 1 day before the NCAA released its Infractions Report for Tennessee, was not a coincidence?

And I'd blame the Athletic Department and the University for any timing based on PR concerns, not her.

For those thinking that I'm too cynical, this was the heading of an e-mail I received from NCAA.com today (from the NCAA, not from Tennessee):

Pearl handed 3-year show-cause, Pat Summitt's greatest moments and more‏

Coached the '84 Olympic team to a gold medal and saw dozens of her former players become coaches.

More wins than any other basketball coach in NC2A history.

38 years, a 1,098-208 record, 16 conference titles, 16 SEC tournament championships, 18 Final Fours, and 8 national championships.

And a few pages off the calendar from now, she won't remember any of it.

What a wretched disease.

Heard that when she started coaching at UT she was making $200 a month and her duties included washing the team's uniforms.

Hard to think of a single individual who has had as great an impact in any given college sport.

Yeah, when she started, women's basketball wasn't popular at all. Now, it's very slightly popular in tenn and conn. Simply amazing.
