DAYTON, Tennessee (AP) -- The county that was the site of the Scopes "Monkey Trial" over the teaching of evolution is asking lawmakers to amend state law so the county can charge homosexuals with crimes against nature.

The Rhea County commissioners approved the request 8-0 Tuesday.

Commissioner J.C. Fugate, who introduced the measure, also asked the county attorney to find a way to enact an ordinance banning homosexuals from living in the county.

"We need to keep them out of here," Fugate said.

The vote was denounced by Matt Nevels, president of the Chattanooga chapter of Parents, Family and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

"That is the most farfetched idea put forth by any kind of public official," Nevels said. "I'm outraged."

Last year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Texas' sodomy laws as a violation of adults' privacy.

Rhea County is one of the most conservative counties in Tennessee. It holds an annual festival commemorating the 1925 trial at which John T. Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution. The verdict was thrown out on a technicality. The trial became the subject of the play and movie "Inherit the Wind."

In 2002, a federal judge ruled unconstitutional the teaching of a Bible class in the public schools.

Maybe instead of that they could institute a seperate but equall policy. They could have "straights only" drinking fountains, and "straights only" lunch counters. Perhaps the could even organize a secret society to protect the straight way of life. If any of those uppity gays needs to learn his place they could burn a tastefully ellogent armoire in their yard to give them a warning. And if that doesn't work they could haul them into Sears and force them to buy clothes off the rack.

Seriously, though, this is absolutely insane. I can't imagine that anyone would pass this sort of law. This is like making it illegal to like the color red, or be fat, or be something other than white. Unbelievable.

Well, I agree with Basebuck in that this country is losing it's mind as a collective. The vote by Hick County to ban gays is a straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back reaction to all the pro-gay shit being shoved down our throats in the media and in real-world by gay-rights and other liberal groups. Personally, I could give a shit what two consenting adults did in the privacy of their abode...whatever turns your crank. But when I get bombarded on a daily basis with propaganda that I'm a uneducated homo-phobic Neanderthal if I don't openly celebrate gay life style, I get pretty pissed off. Homosexuality is not normal...period. It is 180 degrees from inherent sexual nature. Yet, gay rights groups would have you believe that there is absolutely nothing wrong with it and that it's perfectly normal. Well, if it were normal, then everyone, and not only 4-5% of the population, would be doing it. Hell, up until the early 70s it was classified as a mental disorder until it was changed under pressure from--you guessed it--gay rights groups. What really pisses me off is when they equate their "cause" to the Black civil rights movement of the 50s and 60s. Sorry, but I don't recall ever seeing a "Heteros-only" water fountain or "Gays to the back of the bus" sign. Gays weren't openly denied public education. Gays weren't openly hunted down and strung up in public. Gays weren't hosed down and beat senseless by police during their marches. Blacks were openly discriminated against solely by who they were, and not by their actions--huge difference.

The action by these Tennessee hillbillies is totally stupid, but it's just an indication of what lies beneath the surface in the hearts of many people.

Mili, I agree with what you are saying, BUT this is my generations civil rights movement and it parrallels the African-American movement quite a bit, but although not as extreme. It is absolutely INSANE to me that our president is saying that he is against Gay marriages! How is it anyone's legal right to be agaisnt that? Religiously? OK, I get that, even though I don't agree with it. But seperation of the Church and state is not happening here, this shouldn't even be a Presidential "stance" for an election. This will continue to boggle me for as long as it is an issue.

I agree with Mili, and further think that comparing the gay rights movement to the Black rights movement is an insult to Blacks everywhere. Gays are allowed to vote. Gays are allowed to drink at the water fountain, and sit down on the bus.

Sorry, partner, but I just don't see any real parallels. I do know about the NY nightclub incident in '69 or '70 that spurred the gay rights movement (obviously, people should not be attacked because of the sexual preference) and I agree that adults should be allowed to do what they want with consenting partners. However, society as a whole still has its right to determine what is right, normal, and socially acceptable. The problem is that many times special interest groups force their will upon general society. You say it's insane that some be against gay marriages. Well, count me among them, because I feel the exact opposite, and that is I feel that someone who thinks that two men or two women being married is fine is pretty much out there. Marriage is a centuries-old institution that transcends all cultures, races, and nationalities. I challenge you to name me one--just one--culture, nation, race, creed, group, tribe, anything, anywhere, from any timeframe in history, where same-sex marriage was practiced.

It's really sad that the mass media has brainwashed nearly an entire generation of youth into thinking that a heretofore deviant lifestyle is now not only acceptable, but even "in vogue" (remember a few years back when it seemed like every actress in Hollywood had a lesbian girlfriend because it was to in-thing?), and that anyone who thinks otherwise are the ones with problems. Normal, traditional values are being flushed down the toilet because of a small, fringe, vocal group that wants to have their abnormal lifestyle forced into acceptance. Where do we draw the line? Pedophilia? Bestiality?

Mili - I agree with your posts in that the Tennessee county is overreacting to some fringe groups trying to push an agenda. And I agree with your last post when you stated

Unfortunately this runs both ways. In the last 15 years (and ramped up more the last 4), the far religious right has been a small special interest group that has forced their will upon society and continues to do so to this day. Basebuck said it and you agreed with it as do I: it appears that this country is losing its mind.

I don't want to speak for Mili but I think his point is that these far laft groups are forcing things upon us that are inherently unnatural.
I am a Christain and I am at times embarressed by some on the religoius right.
The tact they use is not the tact Christ himself would use. That's when I think they are wrong.
