True, but the foundations for the marriage ceremony originated in the church. The government has since allowed couples to be married outside of a church, most likely following today's cultural belief that the church should be separated from the state. What I find ironic about this is that the founding fathers wanted to keep the government out of the church, not keep the church out of the government. Keeping the government out of the church is the main reasoning behind our Constitution, and the main reason the original "separatists", or Pilgrims, ever came to America to begin with.
