While I probably wouldn't recommend it for telemarketers, my mother had an effective way of getting rid of the obscene/heavy breathing phone calls we started to get when my sister and I were in high school. She kept a boat whistle next to the phone.

My wife would just tell unwanted callers that Dr. sandgk was off collecting new orchid specimens in the Amazon Basin - and couldn't be reached for months.

Then some doofus created the do not call list, we went on it, and our favorite phone game ended. :(
