Health improves for Ginn’s father

What’s good news for Ted Ginn Jr. might be cause for concern for Ohio State’s opponent Saturday, Miami University.

Ginn’s mental burden has been lightened substantially. His father, the football coach at Cleveland Glenville High School, was taken to a hospital two weeks ago after complications following what was reported to be a colonoscopy.

Getting to visit with his father last weekend alleviated many worries, said Ginn, a sophomore receiver/returner.

"He’s fine. All the results came back negative, and everything is straight," he said. "All he’s got to do is get well and he’ll be back out there."

His father was well enough to watch from the press box as his team played its season opener last week. This week, he might return to the sideline, Ginn said.

"He’s going to be a warrior, and he is going to fight through whatever he has to fight through," Ginn said. "And as long as I keep my head straight and fight whatever I need to fight through, I’m going to be fine and he’s going to be fine."

Fresh faces

Coach Jim Tressel said about half of the scholarship freshmen possibly could see playing time Saturday. But he guaranteed it for only a handful, starting with Lawrence Wilson, who turned heads with big plays at defensive end the past three weeks.

Wilson suffered a minor injury in practice this week, but Tressel said he thought he would be fine.

Defensive back Jamario O’Neal is listed as the backup to strong safety Donte Whitner, and O’Neal is listed No. 1 at nickel back, the fifth defensive back in passing situations. Freshman Malcolm Jenkins is No. 2 at right cornerback behind senior Tyler Everett.

The coach also said freshman Alex Boone likely would figure in the two-deep at left tackle, though he wasn’t listed there this week. Junior Doug Datish is No. 1 at that spot leaving camp and sophomore Steve Rehring No. 2.

Zwick progressing

Tressel said quarterback Justin Zwick has not been limited by his recovery from an Aug. 16 ankle sprain. He said Zwick is getting the usual amount of practice repetitions for a starter, about two-thirds.

"We really haven’t changed any," Tressel said. "We’ve run options, we’ve run quarterback runs, nothing different."

Abdallah update

Defensive lineman Nader Abdallah has heard from his brother, who was riding out Hurricane Katrina to watch over the family’s downtown New Orleans business, Tressel said.

On Tuesday, the Metairie, La., native had spoken with his parents and two siblings who evacuated to Houston but had not been able to reach the brother who stayed behind.

Ginn Sr. To Coach in 2006 U.S. Army All-American Bowl

Ginn to coach in all-star game

Glenville High football coach Ted Ginn Sr. has been selected as the East Team's head coach for the 2006 U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The sixth-annual game is Jan. 7 in the Alamodome in San Antonio.

The game brings together many of the top high school players in the country. Typically, many of the blue-chip recruits playing in the game use the event's national television broadcast to announce their college choice.

The official announcement about the coaching staff will not be made until mid-November.

"I was shocked when I found out," said Ginn, who remains a part-time coach for the Tarblooders since undergoing surgery to remove a growth from his colon in August. "It's an honor and I'm very excited."

Ginn was told he can bring one assistant from his Glenville staff to be part of the East Team.

"Matt Chinchar is going with me," Ginn said. "He's been with me a long time and he deserves to go."

Chinchar is serving as the Tarblooders' interim head coach until Ginn returns on a full-time basis.

The pair will joined on the U.S. Army team by two area seniors. Robert Rose, a 6-5, 238-pound defensive end/linebacker at Glenville, and 6-2, 225-pound tailback/linebacker and Ohio State University recruit Chris Wells of Akron Garfield have been named to the team.
