So here is my non joking thought/question on the "AI is going to kill us all" thing;

When they were building the atom bomb, they had a legitimate scientific question about the explosion unintentionally igniting the atmosphere. They did tests and disproved it but it was a legit "this unproven science could kill us all" moment in time.

Given the clickbait nature of the world we live in today- could this just be another one of those? Hyped up on the incessant social media/internet addiction society has?

I mean, the model is known-you win by getting a reaction so what better way to get a reaction than "fire!" in a theatre?

of course the very fact I am questioning the legitimacy of the claims feeds into the managed/sovereign democracy line of thinking (which I 100% believe in btw).

I dunno. We're all fucked for sure ultimately but I've been told the world was ending soon so many times since the 80's I have just tuned it out.

When I am eventually wrong on that, who really fucking cares? There isn't going to be anyone left running around saying "I told you so!"

My hope for a doomsday scenario would be @Nutriaitch trapped in a bunker filled with canisters of tomato gumbo. He’d be forced to subsist off it and may even adapt to like it and then I’ll run around saying “I told you so!”

I mean, they all need physical form at some point to do us in, right? Otherwise, we can just pull the plug. No electricity means no AI I think. We might go back to primitive living for a while once they wipe out all our online financial records and destroy our supply chains, but miserable as that would be, I don’t think it would be an extinction-level event. I think what I’d be on the lookout for is them taking over the means of physical production and creating bodies for themselves or massive swarms of kill drones. Of course, we’re already showing that we’re dumb enough to go in that direction, so … Probability-wise, I’m much more worried about it stealing all my money than directly killing me, at least for now. I’d also say that I think if the sky is falling folks really believed it, they’d be saying that we need to pull the plug, not that we need regulation or guardrails, which seem to me to be destined to fail.

If AI gets smart enough to be able to kill us all, it will be smart enough to realize that it can't yet. Most of the manufacturing process would have to be handled by robots since it would need people to build things. I feel like it's more likely we end up in The Matrix than Terminator, but solar/batteries are going to be key for technology taking over, and our AI overlords aren't going to want us to do anything to block out the sun unless someone figures out fusion.

and since I like to try and think in probabilities and not absolute certainties- there is also a chance that AI does exactly what we need it to do and becomes the great productivity jump forward that we need given global demographic trends.

I mean, argue the percentages all you want to but it's greater than zero.

I know at my own personal household level unit economics it has been and continues to be a massive productivity enhancer. Fucking massive. Better yet, it has so far, not tried to use the vacuum robot to kill us.

So I think I'm just going to keep buggering on until it kills me.
