Tech question: Windows Media Center?

milkman21

didn't you get that memo?
Probably a long shot... but I'll give it a go anyway.

Ever since I upgraded to Dish Network from basic Comcast cable, I've been unable to use the PVR feature on my Windows Media Center. It simply doesn't recognize any incoming TV signal--both in automatic and manual searches.

The Dish signal goes through a box and is distributed to my television and my computer, and the TV works just fine. The computer... not so much.

I think that the problem *might* be the fact that the default cable channel for the feed from the box is channel 73, whereas the Media Center looks at 2,3,4 by default. I really don't know, though.

Any ideas/suggestions? I searched around on google but didn't find anything promising.

Thanks.

Actually it is usually because the capture cards can read from basic cable, or off-air antenna, because your coax goes directly into your card, allowing your tuner to pick it up. Because you are using dish, it doesnt work that way, because of the sat box. I use mine for such, but I have to go from s-video out on the sat box to the s-video in on my capture card, then simply adjust the configuration, telling it to look at the s-video input for the sat signal.

So what you're saying the problem is that he can't coax it anymore.

Seems simple enough.

Good to know. Thanks.

Could I also fix this problem by upgrading my tuner card? My computer is located in an auxiliary room, meaning it's not near the sat box. S-Video (or composite video) would be a problem, as I'd have to re-wire the house.

I couldn't think of any either, but I went ahead and looked around a bit as well, and I found this. It pretty definitive, although it doesn't help you much I'm afraid....

NOTE: Also, just to be clear, the TWINHAN card, and other similar cards for big dish systems, will not work to directly receive DirecTV, Dish Network, or some other small-dish DBS/DSS pay-subscription TV service.

You will most likely only find satellite TV Tuner cards that are ONLY for getting FREE-TO-AIR satellite signals. You will need a C-Band or Ku-Band or S-Band satellite dish to get satellite signals with that type of card. They will NOT be for the small satellite dish for pay subscription satellite TV. You'll also probably need a rotor for rotating and turning the satellite dish to point at the specific satellites unless if you want to point the dish at only one satellite.

Ruel.Net - Any PC-TV Tuner Cards for Satellite TV?

I'm taking those references to "Free to Air" to mean those big old and fugly sat dishes that were the norm before DirecTV and DishTV.

Essentially what is happening is the TV card in your PC can't unscramble the signals from the dish like the tuner box can. I do wonder if maybe you could do it by running the signal through a TIVO or DVR and only then to your PC, but without experimenting with it, I can't be 100% sure.

But a direct connection will NOT work.
