DeAndre Jordan (Bellaire Episcopal H.S. / Humble, Texas) scored 20 points to lead seven players in double digits as the 2007 USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team (1-0) mangled Mali (0-1) 118-56 on Thursday evening in Novi Sad, Serbia.
The USA will continue play against China (0-1) on July 13 (2:30 p.m. EDT) and will cap preliminary play against host Serbia (1-0) on July 14 (12:00 p.m. EDT). Serbia defeated China 78-61 in their opening game.
"I thought we, for not playing for a couple days, shared the ball really well," said USA and DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. "Obviously Mali played hard, but they were really overmatched. I think even though we are really overmatched, at least the score showed we played to our potential and not theirs. It was good for some of the kids, especially our younger kids to get their feet wet. We were able to rest a couple of guys who I think will be key for us tomorrow so we?ll see what happens.
A bigger, faster and more athletic USA squad ran out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back on its opponents. Mali hit a free throw at 3:14 and its first field goal came with 58 seconds remaining in the first period . The Americans closed the first 10 minutes of play with a dominating 34-5 performance that saw eight assists, three steals, four blocked shots and just four turnovers, as well as a sizzling 4-of-6 shooting from 3-point range.
Although Mali won the second period 23-20, there was no threat in the second half of a comeback as the USA was up 86-40 at the end of three and sailed home for the victory.
"They?re a good team, but we just came out and played our best," said Beasley. "When we play together I don?t think anybody can beat us."
In addition to Jordan?s contributions, which included seven rebounds and four blocked shots, the USA?s winning effort was aided by 17 points and six rebounds from Michael Beasley (Notre Dame Prep, Mass./ Frederick, Md.), Tajuan Porter (Oregon / Detroit, Mich.) scored 14 points, Matt Bouldin (Gonzaga / Highlands Ranch, Colo.) notched 13, Raymar Morgan (Michigan State / Canton, Ohio) and Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) each contributed 11 points and Damian Hollis (George Washington / Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) chipped in 10. Additionally, Thompson tied for high rebounding honors with seven and Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S. / Niagara Falls, N.Y.) dished out seven of the USA?s 22 assists.
Thee USA shot a sizzling 65.2 percent (45-69 FGs) from the field, while limiting Mali to a frigid 26.8 percent (19-71 FGs). The Americans also outrebounded their opponents by a dominating 51-24 margin and had 10 blocked shots for the night.
Dont? Greene (Towson Catholic H.S. / Baltimore, Md.) suffered a right shoulder contusion in the second half of the game. As a precaution, -rays were taken and revealed no fracture. He is listed as day to day.
Wainwright, who served as an assistant for the 2006 USA U18 National Team, is heading up the 2007 USA U19 World Championship Team coaching staff, and collegiate head coaches Bruiser Flint of Drexel University (Pa.) and George Washington University?s (D.C.) Karl Hobbs are serving as assistant coaches.

Behind 21 points and seven rebounds from Michael Beasley (Notre Dame Prep, Mass./ Frederick, Md.), the 2007 USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team (2-0) defeated China (0-2) 103-77 on Friday night in Novi Sad, Serbia. Also scoring in double digits were Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S. / Niagara Falls, N.Y.), who notched 14 points, Patrick Beverley (Arkansas / Chicago, Ill.) and Stephen Curry (Davidson / Charlotte, N.C.) tossed in 13 each and David Lighty (Ohio State / Cleveland, Ohio) chipped in 10 points.
The USA will cap preliminary play against host Serbia (2-0) on July 14 (12:00 p.m. EDT). In the other Group B Game, Serbia trounced Mali (0-2) 70-47.
"Certainly it was probably our best game in terms of execution on the fast break," said USA and DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. "We got several baskets on two and three passes after rebounding instead of dribbling it. In all honesty, we probably missed four or five dunks that would have spread this game a little more. We had that lull right at the end of the third quarter that got them back into it a little bit. We made some progress in some areas and took a step back in others. We?re going to have to play a whole lot better to win it all here."
After battling with China for the lead in the first quarter, the U.S. went ahead 14-11 on a Matt Bouldin (Gonzaga / Highlands Ranch, Colo.) bucket at 4:10 and never again trailed. The Americans, who had 10 players compete in the first quarter, wore down the Chinese, who never subbed during that time. As time wound down, Beasley took a feed from Tajuan Porter (Oregon / Detroit, Mich.) for a dunk to put the U.S. up 24-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Continuing to pull away, the red, white and blue outscored China 31-15 in the second quarter for a 55-30 halftime lead. The USA had a little let down in the third quarter as China managed to win that 10-minute span 29-26, but the USA?s foes never seriously threatened as the Americans came away with the victory.
"It was a little tougher than yesterday," said Beasley. "They came out ready to play obviously, but we kept our composure and came out with the win."
The American squad outrebounded China 44-32 and forced 28 turnovers, while committing just 17 of their own. The USA?s unselfish play also led to 20 assists, a high of six from Beverly, on a total of 44 field goals. For the second time in as many games, the U.S. shot better than 50 percent from the field, nailing 53.0 percent (44-83 FGs) from the floor, while China shot 45.3 percent (24-53 FGs).
Dont? Greene (Towson Catholic H.S. / Baltimore, Md.) suffered a right shoulder contusion in the second half of the USA?s first game, did not compete against China and is listed as day to day.

Behind 19 points, including a late three to give the U.S. the lead for good, from Stephen Curry (Davidson / Charlotte, N.C.), the 2007 USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team (3-0) finished out preliminary pool play undefeated after eking out an 82-78 victory over host Serbia (2-1) on Saturday evening in Novi Sad, Serbia.
The U.S. advances to the second round at the top of Group B and will meet Lithuania on July 16 (times TBD), Brazil on July 17 and preliminary second round play ends with a game against France on July 18. The quarterfinals are slated to be played July 20, semifinals on July 21 and the gold medal will be contested on July 22.
"I have great respect for Serbian basketball," said USA and DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. "I am 60-years-old and spent many years in my past with clinics and recruiting in Europe. Coaches like coach (Miroslav) Nikokic are great teachers. They make great adjustments in games. Their teams are very disciplined and very physical. His team would be a very good college team in America. His inside players were tremendous, physical and they finished plays. They are very well coached and they did a great job moving the basketball. We are fortunate to win the game, we learned a lot in playing against Serbia and hopefully it?ll help us in the next round."
Not only did the U.S. receive great play from Curry, with the posts hampered much of the game by fouls the guards stepped it up as Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S. / Niagara Falls, N.Y.) scored 12 points, Patrick Beverley (Arkansas / Chicago, Ill.) had 11 and a team-best nine boards, while David Lighty (Ohio State / Cleveland, Ohio) added 10 points in the win.
Looking at an even game (75-75) with less than two minutes to play, Curry drained a 3-pointer to put the U.S. up 78-75. After a Serbian free throw Curry drove the lane, but his shot was off and with the rebound up for grabs Matt Bouldin (Gonzaga / Highlands Ranch, Colo.) grabbed after it was bobbled around and connected on a jumper with under a minute to play.
Serbia, which had only committed one foul in the fourth quarter, took a time out and started fouling to keep the Americans from scoring. On the inbounds pass following the third foul Stefan Markovic read the play perfectly, stole the ball and sprinted up the court for a layup with 35 seconds remaining.
With time running off the shot clock, Beverly had no choice but to put up a basket and his floater beat the
24-second buzzer, essentially putting the nail in the coffin with only 10.1 ticks remaining. Serbia attempted a three, but Beverly was there for the board to seal the win.
"This was a great game for both us and the Serbian team," said Curry. "I really enjoyed playing in this game. I think this is what the (U19) World Championship is all about, close games going down to the end. We had to make great plays going down the stretch to win this game. I give credit to Serbia for making a great run at the end of the game and playing great team ball. We had a great combo of me and Patrick Beverly hitting big shots down the stretch. The rest of our team is also great with helping us playing defense, we got some stops near the end and then when Patrick hit that big shot with a couple seconds on the shot clock, it really sealed the deal. I enjoyed playing this game and I look forward to playing the next round and moving on to the next competition coming up.
The USA headed into the fourth quarter with a 64-50 cushion and the crowd temporarily out of the action. However, DeAndre Jordan (Bellaire Episcopal H.S. / Humble, Texas) already had four fouls, whileBouldin, Flynn, Raymar Morgan (Michigan State / Canton, Ohio), Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) and Michael Beasley (Notre Dame Prep, Mass./ Frederick, Md.) had each been whistled for three infractions by that time.
Serbia pounded it inside to start the fourth quarter and the host country?s strategy worked. By the 8:41 mark Beasley and Thompson picked up their fourth and the USA?s lead had diminished to 66-55. After that, it was easy money for Serbia, which knew the United States couldn?t afford the least amount of contact so Milan Macvan and Miroslav Raduljica took turns going inside for uncontested layups and with six minutes to play the gap was narrowed to 70-65.
Not only had Serbia gotten back into the game, so did the crowd.
With the U.S. struggling to get off a good shot, Serbia inched ever closer, even knotting the game at 70-apiece, and at 3:24, after Morgan picked up his fourth foul, the USA was up by two, 73-71 with 3:24 remaining and by the 1:58 mark it was tied again at 75-75.
The United States got off to a rough start against its hosts. After shooting 36.8 percent (14-38 3pt FGs) from beyond the arc in its first two contests, the U.S. went 1-of-7 in the first 10 minutes of the game. The squad also sent Serbia to the line for 11 tries after committing nine fouls and by the first quarter break the USA trailed 18-13. At halftime the USA had taken a slim lead, 39-37. Coming out strong in the third quarter, the Americans outscored the Serbs 25-13.

David Lighty (Ohio State / Cleveland, Ohio) and Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) combined for 36 points as the 2007 USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team (4-0) opened up second round play with a 90-81 victory over Lithuania (1-3) at the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship on Monday night in Novi Sad, Serbia.
The U.S. continues second round play against Brazil (2-2) on July 17 (2:30 p.m. EDT) and second round play ends with a game against France (4-0) on July 18 (2:30 p.m. EDT). The quarterfinals are slated to be played July 20, semifinals on July 21 and the gold medal will be contested on July 22.
"We came out really flat and they did some things that really bothered us, but we made some adjustments at the half," said USA and DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. "We really, obviously directed our attack right inside at David Lighty and Deon Thompson, they were terrific. But I thought the thing that really, from the second quarter on, Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S. / Niagara Falls, N.Y.) and Tajuan Porter (Oregon / Detroit, Mich.) did an excellent job of containing their point guard. He kind of shredded us in the first quarter. It?s kind of one of those things with different guys on different nights. Hopefully the guys who didn?t play well will bounce back."
After battling the first quarter against a deliberate and very determined Lithuanian squad, the U.S. trailed 19-18 at the end of the first. However, that would be the final lead for Lithuania. Flynn opened the second with a pair of free throws to give the USA a lead it would never give up. By the end of the first half, which saw 15 Lithuanian turnovers and 16 U.S. steals, the USA was up 45-39.

Patrick Beverley (Arkansas / Chicago, Ill.) hit a pair of threes and had eight points, while Thompson contributed six points in a 20-6 USA run that opened the second half and broke the game wide open, 65-45, with 15:30 to go. Lithuania drained a trio of treys in a 9-2 spurt in an attempt to close the gap, but Beverly countered with two of his own from afar and by the end of the third quarter the USA still held a comfortable 73-57 advantage. DeAndre Jordan (Bellaire Episcopal H.S. / Humble, Texas) kicked off the fourth quarter on his own
6-3 run and the U.S. at 8:25 was ahead 79-60. By the 2:57 mark the U.S. was on top 89-71. However, the USA?s defense slacked off, allowing Lithuania to close the game with a 10-1 run for the final 90-81 score.
Lighty led the pack with 19 points, Thompson finished with 17, while Beverly notched 14 points, passed out four assists and had seven of the team?s 26 steals, four shy of the USA?s record at this event. Flynn finished with eight points and five steals.
"I guess I came out ready to play," said Lighty, who shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the field, 2-of-2 from
3-point and 1-of-1 from the line. "I felt good in warm-ups. I started early on the inside, trying to get to the basket as much as possible. That loosened up the defense a little bit and I got some wide-open shots in the third and fourth quarter."
Deividas Gailius was Lithuania?s top scorer with 19 points, while Lukas Brazdauskis scored 13.
Lithuania won the rebounding edge by one, 32-31.
In other Group E second round play, host Serbia (3-1) beat Brazil (2-2) 87-75, and France (4-0) defeated
China (1-3) 106-57 . In Group F, Spain (4-0) upended Canada (1-3) 83-69, Australia (4-0) took care of South Korea (1-3) 135-79 and Argentina (3-1) nicked Turkey (2-2) 68-59.
Lebanon (1-3) collected its first win with a 76-56 victory over Mali (0-4) and Nigeria (1-3) downed Puerto Rico (0-4) 97-77 in classification semifinal action.
I'm a bit concerned about this next game with Brazil who Serbia beat today 87-75 (and very nervious about france the game after next), looking at that right up and the stats i'm confused how USA only won by 9 points verse the worst team of Group A.

Serbia vs. France tomorrow will be a great game.

Another upset:

Turkey 59 Spain 56

USA and Australia are the only two undefeated teams left. Australia won it last time but they are not considered to be in most peoples top 3 this year. Spain and the U.S. seem to have been the two favorites.

I might be able to find some streams of the game online but there is nothing live online. But there is a live stat-tracker as the U.S. are up 78-48 going into the 4th quarter gith now.

Maybe i'm alone but this is a dead period in the year for sports, baseball is far away from the playoffs still, no nba, no nfl, no ncaa... you'd have to think people would watch these games.

Michael Beasley (Notre Dame Prep, Mass./ Frederick, Md.) scored 16 points and grabbed nine boards as the 2007 USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team (5-0) continued its winning ways after battering Brazil (2-3) 104-65 at the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship on Monday night in Novi Sad, Serbia. Featuring eight players who scored in double digits, the North Americans received 13 points from Patrick Beverley (Arkansas / Chicago, Ill.), Stephen Curry (Davidson / Charlotte, N.C.), DeAndre Jordan (Bellaire Episcopal H.S. / Humble, Texas) and Tajuan Porter (Oregon / Detroit, Mich.) each chipped in 11; while Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S. / Niagara Falls, N.Y.), Raymar Morgan (Michigan State / Canton, Ohio) and Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) added 10 points apiece.
"(Having eight players in double digits) means we were sharing the ball, moving the ball around, playing unselfish," said Beasley. "Great things were happening."
The U.S. will next take on France (4-1) to close out second round play on July 18 (2:30 p.m. EDT). Following tomorrow?s second round contests, the top four finishing teams in each group advance to the July 20 quarterfinals. The semifinals are slated to be played July 21 and the gold medal will be contested on July 22.
"I thought it was a great bounce back from last night," said USA and DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. "We really came out and established ourselves right away. We had a couple of lulls, but I thought a lot of that was due to line-up changes. In the second half we really came ready to play, we scored the first (two) baskets and established ourselves."
Beasley, Beverley and Thompson contributed four points apiece in a USA 12-2 opening run of which Brazil would never fully recover. Brazil finally woke up and began hitting buckets, but by the end of the first quarter, the North Americans held a 14-point, 30-16 advantage.
The second quarter was one of spurts. Each team put together mini runs and by the midway break, it was still a 14-point ball game, 45-31.
Flynn and Thomson hit back-to-back buckets to kick-off the second half and put the United States up 49-31 at 9:23. Brazil made a valiant effort to counter the USA?s defensive intensity, picking off three passes in an 11-3 run and with 16:40 in the game the gap was narrowed to just 10 points, 52-42.
That was as close as Brazil would come. The United States regrouped, stopped Brazil cold and reeled off 19 unanswered points and with 12:53 remaining, the game was in the bag, 71-42. The U.S. ended up outscoring Brazil 33-17 in the third quarter and cruised through the fourth for the win.
"It was a big game for a couple of kids," added Wainwright. "DeAndre Jordan got back on the map, Raymar Morgan got back on the map. The great thing about this group of kids is that a guy like Deon Thompson can sit down tonight and not play much after he carried us last night. It was an important game for Michael Beasley, I thought he really did what we asked him to do defensively and was a real factor against their big kid."
Brazil?s Paulao Prestes had game-highs of 26 points and 13 rebounds for his squad.
In other Group E second round play Lithuania (2-3) beat China (1-4) 85-66, while Serbia (4-1) upended France (4-1) 79-62. In Group F, Canada (2-3) downed South Korea (1-4) 99-83, while Turkey (3-2) upset Spain (4-1) 59-56, and Australia (5-0) nipped Argentina (3-2) 79-78.
In classification play, Nigeria (2-3) finished in 13th place with an 82-65 victory over Lebanon (1-4), while Mali (1-4) earned its first win to take 15th place after edging Puerto Rico (0-5) 89-81.
