Behind 18 points and five steals from Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S. / Niagara Falls, N.Y.), the 2007 USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team (6-0) handed tournament favorite France (4-2) its second loss in as many nights after taking an loss at the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship on Wednesday night in Novi Sad, Serbia.
Also helping in the well-rounded attack were Michael Beasley (Notre Dame Prep, Mass./ Frederick, Md.), who scored 17 points and eight rebounds, Patrick Beverley (Arkansas / Chicago, Ill.) notched 15 points and four steals and Raymar Morgan (Michigan State / Canton, Ohio) chipped in 10 points.
The U.S. advances to the medal quarterfinals as the No. 1 seed in Group E and will take on Argentina (3-3), Group F?s No. 4 seed, on July 20 (7:30 a.m. EDT). The semifinals are slated to be played July 21 and the gold medal will be contested on July 22.
"Again we were really helped by a guy that hadn?t really played much," said USA and DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. "Dont? Greene (Towson Catholic H.S. / Baltimore, Md.) came off the bench and gave us major minutes. He was really prepared to play, he was a difference maker for us tonight. Our guards have really kept us in the game. Michael Beasley is starting to play a little more solid, Raymar Morgan is starting to come around and I don?t know if there?s a better defensive player in this tournament than David Lighty (Ohio State / Cleveland, Ohio). We?re trying to go from game to game and find the right combination. I know we stumbled a little bit at the end. I think we got a little bit tired and they came after us, we got a little bit loose with the ball. But I thought that for a spurt we played as good a game of basketball that we?ve played all tournament. Hopefully we can carry that over to the medal round."
It was a battle royale for much of the first half and with 2:58 to play in the first half the United States found itself on the bottom end of a 32-26 score. Receiving points from four different players, including six from Flynn, the U.S. fought back with a 13-1 run to gain a 39-33 lead with 10.2 seconds remaining before the half. With time winding down, France?s Adrian Moerman started to drive to the basket, was fouled with less than a second on the clock. After making both tries, the USA?s lead stood at 39-35 at the half.
"Of course they came out tough, you never want to lose two games in a row" said Flynn. "I don?t care what kind of tournament it is. Especially a great team like that. You don?t want to lose two games in a row. From the jump they had a different swagger. They were more hungry, more aggressive tonight than we?ve ever seen them play. That picked up our level of intensity and we seemed to match it and it was a good game."
The second half opened with three lead changes and a pair of tied scores and at 7:38 France held their final lead of the night, 46-44. Beverley drilled a three to jump-start a 10-3 U.S. run that included a pair of steals and by 4:06 in the third, the USA was up 54-49. The red, white and blue continued to pull away and with 10 minutes remaining in the contest it was a 10-point, 53-43, ball game.
Four different players scored as the U.S. reeled off 11 consecutive points to go up early in the fourth quarter 74-53. The Americans lost some of their defensive intensity as France chipped away at the gap and with 1:43 to play in the game the USA?s lead dwindled to eight points, 84-76. But the U.S. was determined to put the win in the books and closed the game with the victory.
"France is a real good team," added Flynn. "We had the mind-set coming in that we were playing one of the best, if not the best team in the tournament. Coach Wainwright (told) us getting off the plane here about newspaper articles back home saying that we?d be lucky to win this, France is the favorite to win the tournament and things like that. So coming into this game we were real hyped."
In other Group E second round play Brazil, (3-3) defeated China (1-5) 89-77 and Serbia (5-1) beat Lithuania (2-4) 89-76. In Group F, South Korea (2-4) picked up its second win of the tournament with a surprise 104-96 win over Turkey (3-3), Australia (6-0) remained undefeated after nipping Spain (4-2) 86-84 and Canada (3-3) beat Argentina (3-3) 87-82.
I don?t know if there?s a better defensive player in this tournament than David Lighty (Ohio State / Cleveland, Ohio)
Here is an interview with Lighty after the game.

Behind Patrick Beverley?s (Arkansas / Chicago, Ill.) game-high 20 points, the 2007 USA Basketball U19 World Championship Team (7-0) surged past Argentina (3-4) in the opening quarter and earned a 112-86 quarterfinal victory at the 2007 FIBA U19 World Championship on Friday afternoon in Novi Sad, Serbia. The U.S. next faces the winner of tonight?s (2:30 p.m. EDT) quarterfinal contest between France (4-2) and Spain (4-2), in Saturday?s second semifinal match-up (2:30 p.m. EDT) for the right to play for the gold medal on Sunday.
In addition to Beverley, the U.S. received 16 points from Raymar Morgan (Michigan State / Canton, Ohio), Michael Beasley (Notre Dame Prep, Mass./ Frederick, Md.) chipped in 13, Stephen Curry (Davidson / Charlotte, N.C.) and Jonny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S. / Niagara Falls, N.Y.) had 12 points apiece, while David Lighty (Ohio State / Cleveland, Ohio) and Tajuan Porter (Oregon / Detroit, Mich.) each contributed 10 points.
In the other side of the quarterfinal bracket, Brazil (4-3) upset previously undefeated Australia (6-1), while host Serbia (5-1) tips-off against Turkey (3-3) at 12:00 p.m. EDT.
"Having experience playing Argentina last year in the 18-and-unders and then seeing them down in the Global Games, even though we didn?t play them, we knew they were a team that was going to be a really hard match-up for us," said USA and DePaul University head coach Jerry Wainwright. "We probably could have played small the whole game and it would have been the same result, but I tried to get our big guys some reps and the way (Argentina plays), it?s hard to play (them). I was really disappointed in our defense. We fouled way too much. The game was called a way that was very physical and for a minute there we lost our composure, but got it back. I think we finished the game the right way.
"Our core guys, the David Lightys the Patrick Beverleys, the Johnny Flynns, the Stephan Currys, the Raymar Morgans, that core of guys have really been good. Mike Beasley and Deon Thompson, under tough circumstances guarding smaller guys did a really good job."
The first four minutes of play featured a pair of lead changes as Argentina went ahead 9-7. It was a short-lived bit of glory for the USA?s South American rivals.
Beverley swished in the USA?s first trey of the game, which was followed by another three from Morgan and the U.S. was off and running. Eventually stringing together a 13-0 run, capped by another three from Porter, by 3:55 the squad was in control 20-9.

By the end of the first quarter the U.S. was on top 33-15 and expanded the margin to 62-40 by halftime.
Argentina came out of the locker room on fire, while the U.S. went flat on both ends and with just under five minutes to go in the quarter the cushion was cut to 13 points, 70-57.
"They came out and didn?t hold anything back," said Beverley, who also passed out four assists and grabbed six caroms. "Everybody in the tournament knows that you lose, you go home. That?s the mentality I guess they came out with but we just have to keep our composure, finish plays. It was a really aggressive game, neither team wanted to lose and it got really aggressive. That?s the game of basketball, sometimes you have games like that. But as I said before, we just have to keep our composure and try to come out with a victory."
The USA finally found its rhythm after Porter drove for a high-arching floater to jump-start an 11-0 run that featured seven points from Beverley and ended with the U.S. up 81-57.
Argentina again cut it to 15 points after going on a 9-0 spurt that began in the third quarter and was capped with 8:57 remaining in the game and the score 83-68. Argentina continued its relentless defense and by the 5:07 mark the USA?s lead was down to 91-80.
Feeling good about their chances, the Argentines tightened up their defense even more, but all it did was result in the USA scoring all of its points from the line in an 8-2 run that ended with four minutes to play and the margin up to 99-82.
The U.S. gave up a field goal to Argentina at 4:07 before getting back on track with 10 unanswered points to put the game out of reach 109-84 with a minute and a half to go.
"As was said in Star Wars, we sometimes go to a land far, far away and we get so caught up in the emotion," added Wainwright, who called a time out to regroup when the score was 70-55. "We don?t do a good job understanding time and score. We take quick shots. We?ve given away a lot of leads. All you have to do is give one away at the wrong time and it?s going to cost you three weeks of hard work. I tried to remind them of that. I told them to keep their composure and we wanted a certain kind of shot. We made an adjustment defensively and tried to finish the game on a high note."
Deon Thompson (North Carolina / Torrance, Calif.) grabbed a game-best 10 boards to go with four points and a pair of assists, while Beasley, Dont? Greene (Towson Catholic H.S. / Baltimore, Md.) and Lighty each had seven rebounds.
The USA outrebounded Argentina 51-32 and had 16 steals in the game. However, only nine were credited to players as FIBA doles out team steals when it?s unclear who made the actual steal. The United States also proved its worth from beyond the arc, netting 35.7 percent (10-28 3pt FGs) on the night.
In what was an extremely physical game, the officials whistled a total of 60 fouls that resulted in 40 (30-40 FTs) trips to the line for the U.S. and 28 for Argentina (17-28 FTs). Additionally, Argentina had three players foul out of the game.

I'm having trouble trying to find the video player

It worked for me in Brazil vs. Serbia, but I also can't get it to load back up for this game.

About 5 minutes left in the 2 QTR and the U.S. has been down by nearly 11 all game.

Edit: the good news is, when it DOES finally work, it lets you watch the 4th quarter of previous games, so we should at least get some footage of it eventually.

Edit 2: In other bad news Michael Beasley, who has been an important peice of this tourny, already has 3 fouls.

Edit 3: France just hit with a technical, to help the u.s. come back to within 7 with 2 minutes left in the first half. The game is playing similiar to the first time weplayed France, except Beasley wasn't in foul trouble then.

USA 78- France 75

USA had a hard time this game due to 4-27 3-pt shooting.
It was great watching TEAM USA get very excited about the win afterwards, shows that they care.

USA stole the ball up by 3, with 15 seconds left and turned the ball over trying to run down and dunk the ball. The turnover nearly put them in overtime; thank god that didn't come back to haunt them.
