Kudos for Nick for a great game against Bama. Blocked well and caught a key first down. BTW - on the PI play against him there was two refs watching the play, one from the back and the other from the front and neither of them called PI. It was someone else, further away from the play that threw the flag. One ref (I think the field judge?) even waved off the play.

Thank god the ref not in the picture recognized it....he got legit tackled well before the ball got there.

OHIO STATE'S THREE MOST UNDERRATED PLAYERS RETURNING IN 2015

NICK VANNETT

Because Jeff Heuerman was the starter the last couple of years, and because Ohio State uses its tight ends sparingly, Vannett’s contributions get overlooked. Both tight ends were excellent blockers in 2014, but Vannett was used more in the passing game, catching 19 passes to Heuerman’s 17. This was particularly true in the red zone, where Vannett was a much more likely option for Buckeye quarterbacks.

The 6-foot-6, 260-pound product of Westerville Central caught five touchdown passes, compared to just two for Heuerman. Only Devin Smith (12), Michael Thomas (9) and Jalin Marshall (6) had more receiving touchdowns than Vannett a season ago. If someone had told you that Marshall had caught only one more touchdown pass than Vannett last season, you probably would have been all, “whoa, whoa, whoa, I’m going to have to Google that to verify.”

Both the Big Ten media and coaches named Heuerman as second-team All-B1G in 2014. Sure, Heuerman’s leadership can't be overlooked, but Vannett produced more on the field in terms of receiving. Blocking seemed fairly even.

In 2015, Vannett will likely see the field much more often. He’s the senior now and behind him is a wealth of inexperience.

Ohio State football: No longer sidekick, Nick Vannett embraces role as top tight end

The past several years, tight end had been a duet at Ohio State, with Jeff Heuerman considered the lead singer and Nick Vannett the sidekick who came on strong in the harmonies.

Now with Heuerman gone to the NFL, Vannett is the one singing lead while trying to mentor a younger Marcus Baugh and two understudies.

“Since Jeff was here, I was kind of in his shadow a little bit,” Vannett said. “Now that he’s gone, it’s my turn to step up and prove to everybody I am the player that I am and also to bring Marcus along and the two freshmen along. There are big responsibilities for me this year, being the leader in the group and also playing like I know I can.”

Ohio State's 2015 senior class has a chance to win its 50th game over a four-year period New Year's Day in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. Before kickoff in their final collegiate game, Eleven Warriors will take a brief look back at each player's time in Columbus.

WHERE HE'S FROM
Nick Vannett didn't travel far to Ohio State. The Westerville Central tight end finished his 2009 junior year with 20 catches for 240 yards and two touchdowns. It was enough to earn a four-star rating and catch Jim Tressel's eye.

Vannett committed to Ohio State on June 30th, 2010. He finished his senior season with with 47 catches, 606 yards and eight touchdowns, good enough for All-Ohio Capital Conference honors, among other things.

Fans hoped Vannett, along with fellow 2011 four-star tight end Jeff Heuerman, would form a potential offensive tandem that, along with fellow 2011 signee Braxton Miller, would befuddle opposing defenses for years to come.
