TE Jelani Thurman (Official Thread)

He's still a match-up nightmare for defenses and this is his first year with major PT. Scary Terry didn't look like a starting caliber WR here for the first few years; now he's one of the best in the NFL. Too early to come to conclusions
All those points but he does really need to work on his hands bringing the ball in. Because literally every other skill set is there.

Two other things though. He was wide open on the TD but we've seen guys drop that. So I'm glad for that. Second, that interception was not on him...he wasn't open and it got deflected into a pick.

I only say this because the kid is massively talented and I think will have his moment. There's a reason he's in there.

Not saying he doesn't need work on his hands but I thought the defender made a nice play on stripping that ball out to create the int

I need to shout out Jelani's performance. He was extremely physical out there. I think it was the second goal line TD, he went in motion and COLLAPSED his defender, which Judkins followed for the TD. Also, the hit he put on the defender on the play where the ball was out but they called it down was a sight to behold.
Agreed! When Jelani was in there, he was blocking really well. And he definitely had the key block on that TD when he was in motion... smashed that orange tomato in the mouth

Our staff has to be loving how Jelani's developing

And so we see the other side of recruiting the #1 TE in portal. Although two Frosh on bench and two more coming in. Hopefully Day & Co had a talk with Jelani and convinced him it was for depth/experience.....I'd hate to lose him as well. OK, so now he's a proven blocker, how's about some passes tossed his way? Block in place, and then slip downfield after the LBs commit elsewhere?

That feels up to him to me. He has everything going for him except for reliable hands at this point. He hits the Jugs gun like Marvin Harrison, he'll likely see a bunch more balls. TEs that drop balls are drive killers because they tend to get used to pick up third downs.

I wish he would read this site

I don't think Thurman should be worried about PT since they brought in the Purdue kid.

Someone still has to be the blocking TE and Thurman is the apex predator in the TE room for that role. No one else (that I am aware of) has his size and physical nature. The younger guys won't be physically on par with him and the transfer is a passing game weapon.

Thurman can keep working on being more well rounded for sure but he's not in any danger of losing his spot as the 6th OL and I don't mean that as a slight. It's a legit role.
