TE Jake Stoneburner (Official Thread)

or Dwayne Jarrett. The reason that I think he going to end up a WR is that if you look at the guys on top of the depth charts here (Nicol and Ballard) right now, they are closer to being offensive tackles than receivers. Marcel Frost was a pass-catching type of TE, but he also had background on defense, playing DE. In fact, there were rumors that Frost was going to be the next Will Smith. Brandon Smith also played LBer in HS. In fact, he was brought in as a LBer. Louis Irizarry aside, the trend is to bring in guys who are glorified tackles, albeit amazingly athletic tackles, or guys who've had experience playing defense.

Stoneburner definitely has the size to succeed at WR. He has also proven that he has the speed. As Grad mentioned in an earlier film review, surprisingly, he has a little extra burst in addition to being a fast straight line runner. The big question is how his body will develop. It's not out of the question that Jake will be showing up at the combines in 2011 at 6-5 240 while running a 4.5 :osu:

Yea. His size and speed are amazing. It seems the last few recruiting classes Coach Meyer has been going after the smaller but faster receivers, because that's the system we run.

Jake is a lot more athletic and much more fluid as a pass catcher/runner than Beckum though.

In terms of fan perception, Jake is becoming Roy Hall, another guy whom fans expected to grow into a flex TE. However, the athleticism that both guys possess make them more suitable for the receiver position. Jake will be an excellent possession type of wideout/ redzone weapon.

Jake has the frame to hold the weight...

And as for the comparison to Beckum they are same in height and play that flex role...Also about the same type speed...

Not according to this update.

I will stick to my view that Jake will be a WR. In light of all the 3 or 4 WR formations that we ran on offense, why would you line him up on the line instead of just letting him release against a mismatched CB or safety? In other words, is there really the necessity for a "flex TE" in a spread formation?

Beckum was a LB/DE/TE in high school. Having background playing on the DL naturally helps a player in making the transition to playing in the trenches on the offensive side of the ball.

On the other hand, Stoneburner has been a WR all the way for Dublin Coffman.

Isnt that what a "flex TE" would do in the spread formation...

Motion out of a TE spot out wide in a 2 WR set or stay on the line...

The main thing he will do is cause mismatches...Find ways to get him matched up on smaller corners in the redzone or stretch the middle of the field against slower lb's and safties...
