possible opportunity for Jake?

The bad news continued for the Giants' tight ends on Monday, when coach Tom Coughlin provided more details of Kevin Boss' concussion and revealed that tackle William Beatty, who played as a second tight end on Sunday, will require surgery for a fractured bone in his right foot.

The Giants have Bear Pascoe and Jake Ballard on practice squad, and Coughlin said "we're going to need help there."

Coughlin confirmed that Boss suffered a concussion last season, an admission that could complicate Boss' return to the field. Boss, who also had a concussion late in the 2008 season, endured multiple hard hits to the head last year but never missed a game because of a concussion.

OSU notebook: Stoneburner catches flak after catching passes
Thursday, September 23, 2010
By Tim May
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Before Jake Stoneburner had a chance to brag to former Ohio State teammate and fellow tight end Jake Ballard about his big game last week, Ballard fired a pre-emptive strike by cell phone.

"He was like, 'What's up, Touchdown Boy? You think you're all sweet now?' and stuff like that," Stoneburner said.

Ballard is on the New York Giants' practice squad after signing as a free agent when he went undrafted. If he had had a few more catches at Ohio State, though, who knows? Through three games, Stoneburner has nine, including five Saturday against Ohio University and his first touchdown of the season.

"I don't think (Ballard) is jealous, because he's in the NFL. I should be jealous of him," Stoneburner said. "He probably wishes he'd caught a little bit more, but like I said, he's in the NFL, so he can't really complain too much."

Eastern Michigan rolls into Ohio Stadium on Saturday riding a 15-game losing streak, but Stoneburner said history tells him the Buckeyes will have their minds on the task.

"Last week, people said we might take OU for granted because we just came off a big win over Miami, and then we came out rolling," Stoneburner said. "I don't see why we would do anything different this week."

The life of an NFL practice squad player
By Robert Gartrell

They take punishing hits in practice, bury their heads in playbooks and spend hours watching game film. But they don't play in games.

So goes a season or more for NFL players designated to their team's practice squad.

The practice squad, a small, separate unit from a team's active 53-man roster, is composed of players living in NFL purgatory. Although they're essentially too good to be released from the organization, they aren't quite good enough or ready to fill a spot on the team's official roster.

With only eight available spots, the practice squad is usually filled by rookies and other younger players to help them adjust to the NFL.

Being relegated to the practice squad is often a sobering experience for players who have grown accustomed to playing key roles for their high school and college teams.

"It is a little different," said Jake Ballard, former Ohio State tight end who is now a rookie on the New York Giants practice squad. "I've been playing for eight years and started as a freshman in high school, too. Now that I'm not in the mix, it just fuels the fire."

Giants call up Ballard
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on November 20, 2010

The Giants announced the signed Jake Ballard from the practice squad on Saturday and waived defensive back D.J. Johnson.

Ballard?s promotion could be a sign of worry about tackle Shawn Andrews, who is questionable. As Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger points out, the team might need an extra tight end if Jamon Merideth moves up a spot on the tackle depth chart.

The move could also indicate a level of concern regarding tight end Kevin Boss, who is probable.

Giants tight end Jake Ballard was waived by the team Tuesday in a transaction that will make room on the roster for wide receiver Michael Clayton. Ballard could land on the practice squad once he clears waivers.

7:30 p.m. UPDATED Giants have confirmed all roster moves.

The Giants have yet to announce the Michael Clayton signing or the corresponding roster move, but they've completed the latter part of that transaction.

Tight end Jake Ballard, signed to the active roster off the practice squad on Saturday, has been waived, according to someone who viewed Tuesday's official NFL transaction wire. The person, who requested anonymity because the Giants haven't made their announcement, said the Clayton signing was not on the report, which indicates the move isn't yet official. But it will be.

Ballard, an undrafted free agent who said he was on the field for eight offensive snaps against the Eagles Sunday, will probably land back on the Giants' practice squad once he clears waivers.

Ballard, who was with the Giants all spring and summer, has been on the practice squad since the start of the regular season. Previously, he was waived by the team after suffering a hamstring injury.

Ballard's path back to the practice squad might have been cleared Tuesday evening when the Eagles notified cornerback Brandon Hughes they'll be signing him off the Giants' practice squad, according to someone informed of the transaction who asked not to be named because the Eagles have yet to announce the move.

The Giants officially placed Smith on injured reserve Thursday and added TE Jake Ballard, who played in the last Eagles game. Ballard was previously on the Giants? practice squad. The team signed safety Ben Hannula to fill Ballard?s place on the practice squad.

?We had a roster spot and we felt like we would need to protect ourselves at that spot,? Coughlin said of the decision to promote Ballard. ?Tight end, special teams, fullback ? you name it.?
