(Edmonton) The Edmonton Eskimos announced today the signings of CFL veteran import defensive end Tim Cheatwood and import running back Damien Anderson.

Cheatwood signed as a free agent with the Tiger-Cats in 2002. He played for Hamilton for five seasons at defensive end, appearing in 77 regular season games and registering 224 defensive tackles and 41 quarterback sacks. He was named an East Division All-Star in 2003 and 2004 and was Hamilton?s nominee for the CFL Most Outstanding Player Award in 2003. Cheatwood signed with the Montreal Alouettes in 2007 and spent the first half of the season on the 9-game injured list with a knee injury before being released.

Anderson was a stand-out running back at Northwestern, leaving as the sixth all-time leading rusher in Big Ten history (4,485 yards) and NU?s all-time leader in rushing, all-purpose yards (5,261), rushing TDs (38) and 200-yard games (4). He had a break-out junior year in 2000 when he rushed for a school-record 2,063 yards, and set Northwestern single-season marks with 171.9 yards per game, 2,195 all-purpose yards, 23 touchdowns and 138 points scored. That year he was ranked second in the nation in rushing yards per game, was a first-team All-American and finished fifth in Heisman voting. His senior year was cut short when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. Anderson signed as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals in April 2002. He played 35 games over four seasons with the Cardinals.

February 25, 2009 - arenafootball2 (af2) Mahoning Valley Thunder

BOARDMAN, OH. - The Mahoning Valley Thunder is pleased to announce in conjunction with the arenafootball2 League Office, that Defensive Lineman Tim Cheatwood (6'4, 260) has been assigned to the Thunder. Cheatwood enters his first season in the af2.

Cheatwood is an Ohio native who prepped at state power Cleveland Benedictine. Following high school Cheatwood moved on to The Ohio State University. In four seasons with the Buckeyes, Cheatwood lined up at Linebacker, Tight End and Defensive End. Appearing in 41 games, Cheatwood totaled 64 tackles, eight and a half tackles for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles, two blocked kicks, an interception and three receptions for 17 yards.

Following graduation, Cheatwood moved onto the Canadian Football League where he spent six seasons playing for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos. Veteran Buckeye ready for Thunder
Thursday, March 19, 2009
By John Bassetti

NILES ? During Mahoning Valley Thunder games at the Chevrolet Centre this season, Tim Cheatwood has as slim a chance of hearing ?Oh Canada? as he has the Ohio State marching band?s version of ?Hang On Sloopy.?

At age 30, the former Buckeye is further removed from his college playing days than his years in the Canadian Football League, but he?s not too old to strike up a new tune in af2.

?I?m a family guy now and have kind of slowed down [from a steady diet of football],? Cheatwood said. ?So I?m just waiting for the opportunity to play a little football because I still love the game.?

The 6-foot-4, 260 lineman was a poster boy for durability with OSU, with whom he made appearances in 41 games.

He also exhibited versatility with 64 tackles, two blocked kicks, an interception and three receptions for 17 yards.

He added six seasons in the CFL and attended the NFL Houston Texans? training camp in 2005.

Born and raised in Cleveland and one of two in Mahoning Valley?s camp from Ohio (Howland?s Maurice Smith is the other), Cheatwood last played with the Edmonton Eskimos in 2007.

His first CFL experience was two years with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

?I did well,? Cheatwood said. ?I was team MVP, an all-star and led the team in tackles and sacks.?

Then he signed with the Texans.

?Things didn?t work out with them,? he said, ?so it was back to play with Hamilton two more seasons.?

After injuring a knee, Cheatwood was released by Hamilton.

?It was one of those GM [general manager] things where if you?re hurt they don?t have to pay you,? Cheatwood said.

A day later, he signed with Montreal, but didn?t play a down for the Alouettes. He then went to Edmonton and played eight games.

All of his pro games were at the defensive end/outside linebacker positions.

With both college and CFL careers behind him, Cheatwood?s quickness and hand speed are still among his best tools.

Cheatwood cites injuries to bad roll of the dice
Published: Fri, May 1, 2009
John Bassetti | Thunder Insider

It was good to have Tim Cheatwood weigh in on some issues recently.

Most importantly, the former Ohio State standout who plays defensive end for the Thunder revealed that his practice jersey number (94) is the opposite of his game jersey number (49).

Secondly, Cheatwood answered a nagging question in the minds of some as to why he was absent for the team?s second game.

Cheatwood, who has started in four of Mahoning Valley?s five games, said that he had a vacation planned a year in advance of the April 4 game against the Milwaukee Iron.

?There was nothing shady behind it,? he said. ?The only thing shady was that I couldn?t disappoint my wife. We made arrangements to go to Las Vegas. Before I signed with the team or even before I knew I was going to be playing football, she made those plans. My wife has sacrificed a lot for me. I couldn?t back out.?

Who the heck are we to pry into such matters, anyway?

However, it would be nice to know how much he won ? or lost.

Speaking of sacrifice, Cheatwood broached a topic that has a bearing on success, or a lesser form of it.

Considering the Thunder?s record of 1-4 and its 11-26 showing under recently fired coach Mike Hold, the team?s standing in the af2 may have something to do with a form of compensation or reward, as well as the unwanted visitor that lurks on turfs ? injury.

?There?s a lot of things to blame,? Cheatwood said. ?Right now, guys aren?t making plays,? he said of the No. 1 culprit.

Injuries, too, have been a contributor to Mahoning Valley?s overall malaise.

?We?ve got a lot of them,? he said of injuries to five starters in the first four weeks. ?And they?re guys who are key parts of our team.?

Linebacker Tim Cheatwood will be key to defense this season: Cleveland Gladiators Insider
Published: Friday, March 11, 2011
By Dennis Manoloff, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio ? For the Gladiators to make noise defensively this season, they will need linebacker Tim Cheatwood to build off the progress he made last year.

Cheatwood's first extended taste of the Arena Football League came with the Gladiators, who returned along with the league in 2010 after a one-year hiatus. He appeared in 13 games, including 12 starts at linebacker. Cheatwood finished with 34 total tackles (2.5 for loss) and had a sack and four fumble recoveries.

As training camp has unfolded, Cheatwood barely recognizes the AFL greenhorn from one year ago.

"Night and day in terms of what I've learned and how I feel out there," he said. "The second camp has been a lot easier than the first because of the experience factor. It's only a matter of time before you pick up the little things."

Cheatwood plays the "Mac" linebacker, who is allowed by AFL rules to blitz. The other linebacker, the "Jack," is restricted to sideline-to-sideline coverage.

"Tim can be a potential impact player for us," Gladiators coach Steve Thonn said. "He's big and strong, but he's not just a thumper. He can mix it up. He's got moves."

Cheatwood, 32, broke into the arena game as a defensive end with the Mahoning Valley Thunder of arenafootball2. He enjoyed his time at end but would not want to switch back from the "Mac."

"This position gives me a chance to utilize my skills best," he said. "I'm physical, I hustle and I know how to get to the ball."

Cheatwood, a former Ohio State Buckeye, is listed at 6-4, 270.

Cheatwood leads AFL in sacks
By: Scott Piker, newsnet5.com

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Gladiators are getting set for their second appearance in the Arena League playoffs since the franchise moved from Las Vegas. The Gladiators last playoff appearance was in 2008.

The Gladiators will host the Georgia Force on Sunday July 31st at three o'clock at Quicken Loans Arena. The Gladiators beat the Force 62-48 at the "Q" back on June 11th.

One of the keys to the Gladiators success has been the play of Cleveland native Tim Cheatwood. The former Ohio State Buckeye and Benedictine Bengal lead the AFL in sacks with twelve and half. Cheatwood also has a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception. Cheatwood is in his second season with the Gladiators after playing in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Cheatwood also spent time with the Houston Texans in 2005.

Cheatwood and the Gladiators hope to make a long playoff run and eventually bring the Arena Bowl championship to Cleveland.
