Parents are bringing their big OSU tent, griller, food, and some friends. I'm meeting them up early in the morning and bringing the beer. We've always parked at the Fawcett Center and that seems to be a PRIME Tailgaiting spot. I can't wait.

The lot over by the AG building on Fyffe is a big tailgating spot. Its a Day of Game lot and real close to the stadium, but you have to get there really early to have a shot at it. And if you leave your car there over night, I would try to get back to it fairly quickly on Sunday. One of the drawbacks to this lot though is the heavy foliage and trees that will block a satellite signal if you are bringing a dish. Everything is digital now, but any tv you'd rent would pick up the over the air digital signal. Unless you're renting a 13" black and white from a guy named Guido at 5th and Neil.

Some other lots with tailgaters are the lots on Fred Taylor up by the RV's and the polo fields along Cannon. All are Day of Game lots.

Keys to tailgating:
  • No Open Containers. Use opaque red cups
  • Don't be obnoxious and draw attention to your party
  • Don't give a beer to just anyone who walks up to your tailgate. They have busted people that way in the past
  • Prepare for the weather. Summer is over
  • Make sure you bring enough gas for your generator to not run out during the game

Dont forget ice!!! LMAO It sounds basic but that was something I did once. UGHHH

Currently, the Google StreetView of the Fawcett Center shows tents, an inflatable Brutus, and people carrying coolers. Must have been taken on a game day!

Hope to get a spot there before the Minnesota game.

Tailgating Tips

Hey Everyone,
Football and tailgating is not hugely popular here in the northeast like it is in OHIO. I will be traveling from Maine to Columbus for a game in Sept and wondered what real tailgating is like. Do people just walk around drink with random strangers or are invites needed. Basically, I need a crash course on REAL tailgating!

Welcome to BP. I remember there being a few threads regarding tailgating that were very helpful. They may be buried somewhere, but if I come across any of them I'll be sure to link them for you.

Tailgaters are typically very receptive of other people looking for a good time, Buckeye fans more than visiting teams, but all are usually welcome.

Your best bet would be to scope out some of the bigger ones, be polite and impressed with the set up (odds are you will be impressed). Find out who's running the show, introduce yourself, tell them you guys are from out of town, ask if they mind you mingling with the crowd and offer a couple bucks up for the food and drinks (still saving a ton over the bars). I recommend the "larger" Tailgates, >20 people, because there tends to be food and drinks available. So, you will be less likely to hear that there isn't enough to spare. Again, if you're a personable and easy going person... You shouldn't have any problems finding a good time.

Cal fan here - tailgating question

Hello Buckeyes!
Cal fan in Chicago here. I am headed out to the game on the 15th with 5 or 6 friends. We are looking to tailgate before the game and wanted to get your thoughts. Is it possible to buy parking passes directly from OSU, or would I need to go second market? Also, any recommendation on what lots allow and are best for tailgating. Thanks much in advance! We are looking forward to the Ohio State Experience.

Lastly, any bars / other places you would recommend not missing on Friday night or Saturday morning?

No parking passes except for the stadium lot and the RV lots (I believe). Good luck getting one of those. There are various lots right across the river and you can pay to park in one of those ($10 I think) and set up your tail gate.

Little Bar is a good bar. I wouldn't advise you venturing too far south of high street into places like O Patio, etc. Drunk college kids can be hit or miss on friendliness to out of towners.

For Friday night I think most people in Columbus would recommend the Arena District for bars (http://arenadistrict.com/food-and-drink/) or possibly the Granview Heights area (http://www.citysearch.com/listings/grandview-heights-grandview-heights-oh/bars_pubs/7920_1686?page=1) and if you want to get the full college student experience you can try your luck at the Gateway (http://southcampusgateway.com/food-drink.html).

I always had a good time at the Gateway but I was an Ohio State student. Opposing fan experiences may very. For example, I once saw the police mace a big group of Penn State fans for "blocking an exit"... they were all jumping around in the courtyard doing their stupid zombie nation chant or whatever when they got maced... it was extremely hilarious- but probably not for them.

I think a general rule is that if you're not acting stupid and drawing attention to yourself you should be alright anywhere outside of off campus student housing (north of Lane, east of High, and south of 11th).

Best to probably park in the West Campus Lot (they have shuttle buses goign to the stadium if you don't like walking and if you don't mind, just follow the crowd, they'll be heading the right way.) Like what has been said, there's no parking passes, just show up and pay there.

Tailgating is best anywhere near the stadium or anywhere along Woody Hayes Dr. If you plan on your vehicle to be the one doing the tailgating, get there early and find a spot along Woody Hayes Dr.

Regarding the experience, check out skull session (basically a pep rally for the Buckeyes) and make sure you're in your seat 20 minutes before the game to see the band take the field.

All the bars I know of are no longer there as I've been out of the college scene for over 12 years.

There is plenty of gameday parking around campus. Check out the link:

http://tp.osu.edu/Maps/FootballParkingMap.pdf

Parking at university lots and garages is $15. You may find private lots nearby that charge a similar amount, but unlikely to find much cheaper. The BMI Credit Union at Kinnear (near its intersection with Olentangy River Road, near Lennox Towne Center shopping center) donates all its parking fee revenue to charity. Some other private lots may do likewise.

As for bars, if you like crowds there's no better Buckeye environment than the Varsity Club at 278 West Lane Avenue, known locally simply as "the VC." You won't have too much trouble finding other bars near campus, and most are pretty jammed up on gameday.

If you don't like crowds so much, I highly recommend the Ohio Union (student union) at the corner of 12th and High. It's an impressive building that gives you a great sense of campus life. I also recommend a visit to the William Oxley Thompson Library, one of the truly great college libraries and a good place to rest up after pre-game beverages on your way to the stadium. Finally, a trip to Orton Hall is a must for fans of fossils and geology, as it has a phenomenal (if small) museum with loads of interesting rocks and bones.
