freshmen year spring break we went on a cruise. my buddy was in charge of alcohol, as the rest of us weren't 21, and they wouldn't let us buy booze on the boat.

He put everclear in pert plus bottles, and told us he washed em out several times... let's just say I can no longer shower w/ pert plus, because the smell of "shampoo & coke" (as we dubbed it) makes me want to puke.

Obviously your friend didn't know the real way to smuggle alcohol onto a cruise ... just buy bottled water and fill it with clear rum or vodka.

Everclear is disgusting enough by itself, can't imagine what it would taste like in shampoo form

we did meet some girls who had put their alcohol in listerine bottles, and color coded rum and vodka with diff food coloring.

Ohio State Grills

Last season i saw some people who had charcoal grill with lids that looked like Ohio State helmets. Does anyone know who carries these? I jumped around to a bunch of stores today and I couldn't find anything. Any ideas?

Tailgating around stadium

I'm just curious...I realize there is probably a huge waiting list, but how does one get a spot in the parking lot just outside the stadium to tailgate? Is a season ticket required? Who would someone contact to get "on the list"? Thanks.:osu:

Good luck with this one. I had season tickets for several years and never got close to sniffing entrance into that lot.

Not sure but I've had the choice in years past (since buying my Club Seats with the new Stadium opening) to get East Stadium Lot or Tuttle Garage and I've always taken Tuttle Garage. I guess you'd have taken East Stadium Lot huh?

Tailgating

I searched extensively to see if there was already a thread but didn't find one. My first regular season Columbus experience is coming up next weekend at the wisc game. I was at the spring game this year but I just drank at the varsity club before the game because I was alone. This time a buddy and I are driving down from North Dakota. Does anyone have any good advice or know what we should hit up first? Is there any tailgating protocol or is everyone cool and we can just meet people as we party?

The beauty of tailgating in Columbus is that pretty much everyone inter-mingles quite a bit from tailgate to tailgate. You have no enemies on campus and frequently I'll see visiting fans tailgating with our regulars and it all just becomes one big party. As long as you bring something to table food and drink wise, you will likely be accepted by everyone around you. Go in empty handed and you're just a moocher.

Wisconsin will be a 3:30pm kickoff, so the first key is to pace yourself. If you want to get into a good tailgating lot, you have to get there early, like before 9:00am. Preferably before 8:00am. Bring stuff to cook breakfast early and stuff for lunch later. Bring red opaque cups for your "beverages", as Ohio has fairly stiff open container laws that the university has been cracking down on heavily. Prepare for the weather. October 10th could be 85 or 45 degrees at kickoff.

If you have an specific questions, please ask. Tailgating is my one subject of expertise.

Thanks a lot. Although we didn't really plan on parking. We were hoping to leave the car at the hotel and cab it to campus. We were just hoping to bring our beverages and mingle with people. I figured we could probably walk to some nearby restaurants for food. Are there venders in the parking lot with food or beer like at pro games? If we did bring the car does it have to be moved after the game or can it stay there overnight? I really appreciate the help.

Despite the ban on alcohol in the lots, the university isn't naive enough to believe there won't be any. No one wants to see people get all liquored up and then drive home from the game. The only weekend we generally ask people to move their cars that night are on student move in weekend. That weekend was during the Toledo game in Cleveland, so it didn't effect tailgating here at all.

It is very possible to cab in and join in the tailgate scene. Like I said, as long as you bring something to the table, many tailgaters will welcome you right in, once you prove you're not one of the university's beer gestapo, who often walk around the lot in Ohio State gear, unshaven, and looking like party animals hoping to bust somebody. If you make your way to RV lots, find a tailgate to your liking, introduce yourself and explain you're in from North Dakota looking to tailgate before the game, few will turn you away.

I thought the "Beer Gestapo" disappeared along with Karen Holbrook.

At the USC game, a cop came up and said the "task force" would be around and to make sure everything was put away. The story goes, the Navy guys next to us for the Navy game we're drinking - and the officers refused orders to give them citations. The cop told us: "There was no way I was going to ticket the guys from Navy who were just having a good time."

The rain helped last week, but there have been more troopers walking around this year than in the past.

Bottom line is, don't act stupid and you'll be cool.

Scooter,

I have a couple of questions for you. I am driving down this weekend for my bachelor party. The plan is to set up a tailgate in the morning for the Wisc. game, and watch the game on a tv from our tailgating spot. We have tailgated a few times but never to this extent with a tv etc. First, if we park in the lot just north of the tennis courts, can we leave our cars there overnight? Second, of the day of game ($10) parking lots, which is most likely to have others tailgating during the game? Last time we were at the lot past the tennis courts it seemed like most people just parked and left for the game. Any lot more popular during the games than others?
This question may be a bit esoteric, but with the new changes to tv, have people been experiencing problems picking up the game on game days. How do people usually do this, we are renting a tv and have a generator type thing to run the tv. Is that all we need, do you know (or anyone else know?)?
Thanks for all your help.

The lot over by the AG building on Fyffe is a big tailgating spot. Its a Day of Game lot and real close to the stadium, but you have to get there really early to have a shot at it. And if you leave your car there over night, I would try to get back to it fairly quickly on Sunday. One of the drawbacks to this lot though is the heavy foliage and trees that will block a satellite signal if you are bringing a dish. Everything is digital now, but any tv you'd rent would pick up the over the air digital signal. Unless you're renting a 13" black and white from a guy named Guido at 5th and Neil.

Some other lots with tailgaters are the lots on Fred Taylor up by the RV's and the polo fields along Cannon. All are Day of Game lots.

Keys to tailgating:
  • No Open Containers. Use opaque red cups
  • Don't be obnoxious and draw attention to your party
  • Don't give a beer to just anyone who walks up to your tailgate. They have busted people that way in the past
  • Prepare for the weather. Summer is over
  • Make sure you bring enough gas for your generator to not run out during the game
