I went with the first option. I could care less about the signatures because I turn them off at work. As for Avatars, I would hate to turn them off since I often rely on them first to identify posters rather than their acutal names...it's just the way my brain processes information. For example, when I see a picture of Chris Griffin, I know the post will relate to something of the HOMO persuasion.

Even though the votes are pretty close it sounds like this is the most common answer. I know I use the avatar as my first method of identification most of the time. Nothing is a problem in my current job, but if I had less privacy at work I would turn off anything that I was worried about, but avatars should be clean, and for the most part I believe they are.

Agree with exhawg...it doesn't sound like many (if any) would be upset if they had to turn the sig's off...Dryden? Is this cool with you? Obviously, we can keep discussing, but because I cannot offhand think of anyone that has an inappropriate avatar (closest I can think of would be Jaxbuck, but I don't think even that comes close to crossing the line), do we need to make any changes?

I think there is a difference between T&A and softcore porn. ie VG vs. SIMV/BMax. If someone sees a sexy girl in a bathing suit, that's one thing. But if they see you scroll pas a pic where the camera is fixated on her snatch or somewhat voyeuristic, that's a different level.

I would be disappointed to have everyone turn off sig pics to cater to the few outlandish ones, b/c most of them really add a personal flair to their posts. But this is a democracy here at BP.
Yup, except for JWins. He must use at least 4 avatars on a good day. He really throws me for a loop if he's using one that isn't Santonio.
very true, pretty sure it has surpassed my underwear changing on many days for that reason.

edit: I agree with dryden, i don't think censorship is the answer, I just think that some of the recent ones have been pushing the line

As I said, I personally don't want any additional rules. I just want people to recognize there is a romper room for a reason, so post the videos and wallpapers there, not in your sigs.

I think both sigs and avatars should be no worse than PG-13...no nudity (meaning bare breasts, punani, etc.) and no serious profanity (nothing worse than "damn" or "hell"). These are things profanity filters won't catch. SIMV's Asian gyrating girl and Mr. Incredible's bouncing boobs gal in their signatures are about the edge of the envelope as far as images should go. Until the system could support different avatars and sigs for different portions of the site, we need to keep them no worse than PG-13 since they're site-wide.

For the most part, everybody keeps their avatars G-rated...and I don't see the big deal if they aren't. If you are at work, disable them. If you just don't like seeing that stuff, then just disable it all together. I haven't seen any Avatar so offensive that there would be many people out there that couldn't stand seeing it.

Sigs are different. There are lots of PG13 sigs out there right now...and personally I love them! Everyone has an avatar, not everybody has sigs, so I think this is something that if you didn't like, again you could disable without losing much of anything. I think the sigs are all in good fun...nothing is X-rated...and some of the sigs are some of the best PG13 pics I have ever seen.

I believe 99% of the time sigs and avatars are tastefully done, and it really isn't a problem here at BP. It's good to have discussions about it so it doesn't get out of control, but I don't think it has. If A LOT of people REALLY have a problem with somebodies sig or Avatar, they can always PM that person...and most of the people at BP would change their new avatar of Sig if lots of people found it offensive.

I'd like to eliminate all sigs from the football forum and the recruiting forum - I'm not a prude, but the sigs (all of them) clutter up the forums and slow down loading times (which can be an issue during game threads). Also, the PG-13 and R sigs make our site appear "less professional", which isn't really an issue in open discussion, but could conceiveably be an issue in the football forums where we'd like to present a positive "face" to all visitors.

I have never had a problem with anyone's avatar - they are not as distracting as sigs, and they are so small that they are rarely "offensive".

If sigs and avatars could be turned off in the Recruiting forum, I'd say there isn't a need for any new restrictions otherwise.

Being able to turn off site components, ignore someone, or use a browser that can block a particular image is plenty accomodating, IMHO. Plus, there's always the option to just pm someone and ask them politely if they'd mind removing that which you find offensive.
<LABEL for=rb_optionnumber_4>One caveat - the default for guests and new members should probably be to block sigs and maybe avatars, and to filter language. </LABEL>

I think it is better to err on the side of no signatures, but there are gonna be plenty of people who have no idea they are missing signatures. The language thing is a decent idea tho.
