ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 7 (Reuters) - Lawyers for Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ.N: Quote, Profile , Research) and Vonage Holdings Corp. (VG.N: Quote, Profile , Research) made their final arguments before a federal jury on Wednesday in Verizon's $197 million patent infringement lawsuit against the Internet telephone upstart.
The eight-member jury was expected to begin deliberating later in the day. Lawyers for both sides said outside the courtroom that the jury could reach a verdict as soon as Wednesday or Thursday. A lawyer for Verizon told jurors that Vonage built its business based on Verizon's patents and said Vonage should be forced to pay $197 million in damages.
Going forward, Vonage should also be ordered to pay Verizon a royalty of $4.93 per customer per month for the voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) technology central to the case, said Verizon lawyer Dan Webb.

Why's that sweet? Getting rid of two office lines and a personal line that were costing me close to $150/month from SBC in favor of Vonage was the smartest thing that I've ever done. I love that effin' company. Having my voicemails e-mailed to me as wav attachments alone keeps me from having to hire somebody to sit in the office in Columbus.

This sucks. I have Vonage so I can have a home telephone without going through the local phone company. I love the service. I only pay $15/month for it, and I'll be pissed if my bill goes up 33% because Verizon wants five bucks.

BTW, is Verizon seriously arguing that Vonage infringed upon one of their billing system patents? Seeing as how Verizon has probably screwed up more bills than they've got right, that's probably not something I'd be eager to bring up in a court of law if I were them.

You have to love big corporations. They'll preach about the market and deregulation right up until the moment that the free market starts kicking the shit out of them. Then, they'll run to the lawyers and their bought and paid for politicians, crying like the little bitches that they are, for protection from the market.

Ladies and Gentlemen we have a winner!

Oh, and the patents at issue concern VOIP.

I work for AT&T (formerly SBC, formerly Ameritech, etc.) and have heard numerous good things about Vonage and some bad things. They have had issues with 911 service causing at least 1 death that was attributed to the service. Once AT&T and Verizon have their fiber to the prem serivce up and running I think Vonage will be practically obsolete anyhow. With a home phone, cell service, 5 to 10 meg h.s. internet and interactive television all on one bill I think the monopoly will be back running strong. Although with the fiber service running smoothly they will also need less technicians...:(
