ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 7 (Reuters) - Lawyers for Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ.N: Quote, Profile , Research) and Vonage Holdings Corp. (VG.N: Quote, Profile , Research) made their final arguments before a federal jury on Wednesday in Verizon's $197 million patent infringement lawsuit against the Internet telephone upstart.
The eight-member jury was expected to begin deliberating later in the day. Lawyers for both sides said outside the courtroom that the jury could reach a verdict as soon as Wednesday or Thursday. A lawyer for Verizon told jurors that Vonage built its business based on Verizon's patents and said Vonage should be forced to pay $197 million in damages.
Going forward, Vonage should also be ordered to pay Verizon a royalty of $4.93 per customer per month for the voice-over-Internet protocol (VoIP) technology central to the case, said Verizon lawyer Dan Webb.
