Surround sounds come son and then goes off?

I had the same thing happen to mine. What I did to fix it was take a medium to large-sized sledgehammer and started smashing the receiver a few times. I don't remember how many times I hit it, exactly--just do it until your arms get tired. Then take the pieces and put them back together with gorilla glue. Be careful during this point because the gorilla glue is pretty sticky.

Hope that helps - It probably won't play sound anymore but the good news is that it won't act all smug and just say hello when it doesn't really mean it.

You joined to ask that question here? Interesting. Never really thought of BP as the place to go for AV advice.

As for a real response, what is the input while it comes on and off? If it's a DVD, the initial screens are coded in surround sound, but the title screens are not. So it will come on, then go off, then come on again when the movie starts. Are you using the correct input (HDMI, fiber optic cable, etc.)?

To get better help I suggest AVSforum.

Sounds like it's playing hard to get...or...and I'm sorry to be the one telling you this...but saying hello then getting turned off right after...it may be fucking someone else. Sorry brah.

Bad news. Sir John is a jealous guy.
