I can't wait for Bluntman and Chronic to come out. :p :pimp:

Good news!

Holden: "Inside sources tell me Mirimax is starting production this Friday on their adaptation of underground comic fave 'Bluntman and Chronic'."
Jay: "Friday? Shit, does it say who's fuckin' playing us in the movie? "
Holden: "No, but it's Miramax, so I'm sure it'll be Ben Affleck and Matt Damon. You know, they put them in a bunch of movies."
Jay: "Who?"
Holden: "You know, those kids from 'Good Will Hunting'."
Jay: "You mean that fucking movie with Mork from Ork in it?"
Holden: "Yeah, I wasn't a big fan, either, but Affleck was the bomb in 'Phantoms'."
Jay: "Word, bitch. 'Phantoms' like a motherfucker!"
Holden: "What's up now?"

www.superherohype.com is a pretty nice site for all the comic-related movies.

The 8 movies I listed (Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, Batman Begins, Elektra, Dare Devil, and Punisher) have made a total of $1,430,027,614 in America. Again, all of these movies were released in a span of four years. Why? Because Spider-Man made a shit load of money, starting the craze in America and forcing Hollywood to start pumping out 2-3 of the popcorn flicks a year. I don't see how you can argue against the fact that comic book movies are more popular now (2002-2005) than they were in the 70's, 80's, or 90's. The box office numbers and media attention that nearly every one of the movies gets shows that.

X-Men was the first of the recent comic book boom. That gave Marvel enough money to get Spiderman out IIRC.

BTW did anyone mention Sin City? I think that counts.

I loved that movie, but Phantoms sucked ass.

The only reason that there was a wane at all was because Batman and Robin was HORRIBLE!!! That made the movie companies think that there was not in interest anymore, when in reality it was because the movie was just plain bad. I don't see how you can argue that the hype wasn't there for the movies in teh 70's and 80's....you were not alive. When the original Batman came out the media hype was huge for it. people loved it, same with the superman movies. You were not around in the 70's or 80's, I was trust me the hype was there. like was pointed out about x-men was the first of all of these new wave that got the ball rolling. if that movie would not have been sucessful none of the other movies would have been made. In the same sense if the batman movies and superman movies would not have been sucessful in the beginning in the 70's and 80's then Xmen would have never been made because it would be argued that comic book movies don't sell. I am not going to argue that comic book movies are not extremly popular right now. But to call them a fad is very shortsighted and uneducated.

It depends, can a fad last 50+ years? :p

I think I remember a Capitan America movie being made in the past 20 years as well as a "The Flash" TV show that I used to watch.

What "resurgence" be a more agreeable term, rather than fad? It certainly does seem like there are more comic book movies being made now than there were 10 years ago.

I think this is due to Marvel Comics. Spiderman and Batman are both DC Comics and were the only real movies made until the boom of the past 5 years. I remember an interview with Stan Lee where he said they wanted to make Spiderman ever since Batman came out in 89, but they didn't have enough money to get it done. X-Men gave them a boost in cash and after Spiderman came out they could do whatever the want, which explains all the crappy movies that came out. Now DC wants back in so they made Batman Begins and are making Superman.

Batman Returns (1992) - $162,833,635
Batman Forever (1995) - $184,031,112
Batman and Robin (1997) - $107,325,195
Blade (1998) - $70,141,876
X-Men (2000) - $214,948,780
Blade 2 (2002) - $81,645,152
Spider-Man (2002) - $403,706,375
Dare Devil (2003) - $102,543,518
Incredible Hulk (2003) - $132,160,047
Punisher (2004) - $33,664,370
Blade Trinity (2004) - $52,397,389
Spider-Man 2 (2004) - $373,524,485
Elektra (2005) - $24,407,944
Batman Begins (2005) - $205,343,774
Fantastic Four (2005) - $154,677,101
Sin City (2005) - $74,098,862

Do you see the difference in income between the 90's Batman movies and the recent comic book movies? The only movies that made reasonably less since Spider-Man was released were Elektra, Sin City, Punisher and the Blade Movies (Sin City, Punisher, and the Blade movies were rated R) . Like I said, a fad is when something becomes extremely popular for a short period of time, and right now comic book movies are extremely popular.

Actually, they always had the money, but the movie rights to Spiderman were owned by a 3rd Party and tied up in legal limbo for years. Most of the Marvel characters, much like James Bond, came out in the early 60's and their TV/Movie rights were sold for a quick buck when Marvel was a small company.

The Fantastic Four's movie rights have been an absolute nightmare. Basically, the legal rights to the characters is the reason why we got the classic Roger Corman 1994 Fantastic Four movie and the reason why there is no Human Torch in the FF's late 70's cartoon (Herbie the Robot was used in his place for the first couple of seasons).
