good question. Where can we park for free during the summer time? Over by beekman park? It's a bit of a mess down there east of the olantangy with all of the construction.

The official site said to park next to St. John or next to the Schott.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Ohio State football team will hold an open practice in Ohio Stadium on Monday evening, August 24. Admission is free to the public. Gates will open at 6:30 p.m. for admission to the stadium, with the 2009 Buckeyes expected to arrive at 7:15 for their preseason practice under the lights beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m. There will not be an autograph session prior to practice.

Admission is free to the public. For the most convenient free parking, fans should park in the lots adjacent to St. John Arena and the Schottenstein Center.

Also that evening, the new William Oxley Thompson Library on the Oval will be open to the public, and tours will be available from 5-6 p.m. Coach Jim Tressel will be signing copies of his bestselling book "The Winners Manual" from 6-7 p.m. that evening.

Fans can also stop into St. John Arena to catch some action from the women's volleyball team as it holds its intrasquad scrimmage from 6-8 p.m. Admission is free.

A few quick hits after getting back from the open practice:

TP - Leaps and bounds above any throws he was making last year. Sharp, quick, showed good feet. He has improved and I'm shaking right now getting ready for the first game.

Bauserman - May have been a product of the OLine but the pocket seemed to collapse on a lot of his plays. He was constantly moving but showed good throws on the run.

Guiton - He has height, no doubt about it. A couple of years in the weight program and this guy will be solid. His arm is strong and he can make the throws. I definitely see him becoming something as he sits behind TP for a couple of years.

Herron - Showed good burst upfield. He looks very hungry to get out and play. I think he did have a fumble in his first carry of the 2 minute drill...

Saine - He has his speed and he's putting it out there. Made a nice long td grab off of a beautiful throw from TP. He's catching balls and showing good intensity running the ball.

Berry - A lot smaller in stature than I had anticipated but he definitely looks like what he has been billed to be. Quick, runs with power and has good hands catching.

J. Hall - Even smaller then Berry it appears, but definitely has put on the mass. He has some wheels heading up the field.

Posey - Looked in top form. Made some really nice grabs in the endzone drills. He is definitely appearing as though he has excelled and can play the role he will have to this year.

T. Washington - Same as Posey. I could almost say TP is looking to him often down the middle and he has made some really great grabs on several plays. Looks like he could break out big time this year.

Carter - made some really nice grabs. He has hands and size and shows good moves. I'm really really excited for him. He's going to be solid.

Didn't see a heck of a lot from Small or Sanzo, but Chris Fields made a lot of grabs that impressed me.

Coleman - Got beat a few times on endzone drills. He has bulked up well this offseason.

Amos - Looked solid, had a couple of nice breakups, same can be said for Chekwa and a few of the freshman. Torrence might have gotten beat once or twice.

It was hard to get a good idea on the line play from where I sat but the second and third string Olines seemed to have some trouble. TP did have one running td and it was mostly due to him switching his direction and showed lots of athleticism. He should have a few like that this year no doubt.

They ran the old fake draw, step back and throw down the middle from the Troy Smith days and it worked well. I'm sure we'll see that this year too.

Otherwise it was very plain playcalling but it's to be expected from the open practice.

That's enough for now I suppose. I'll let the real guys make the reports. Gotta get back to studying...

Impressions from the open practice

Beautiful night at Ohio Stadium, clear, with temperatures in the 70s dropping into the high 60s. Only an estimated 5,500 fans showed up, though, compared to 12,000 last year.

First, a disclaimer: Because I was writing a "live" story for tomorrow's paper during practice, my observations are mostly from a Jim Tressel news conference and about 30 minutes of watching individual drills. After that, it was time to head to the press box and feed the daily beast!

Buckeyes On the Mend as Fall Camp Continues with Open Practice
By Brandon Castel

If Ohio State wants to continue drawing 10?s of thousands of fans to its fall open practice at Ohio Stadium, they might want to consider bringing back the pre-practice autograph session.

While last year?s open practice drew 12,000 fans to the Horseshoe in the first year without autographs, Monday?s version drew less than half of that crowd despite exceptional whether and a newly designed stadium that now includes a video board on North end along with video strips lining the East and West sides of the stadium.

Even the retired numbers and national championship banners had a new, fresh look to them Monday night, but without the draw of an autograph session, which, in the past, has allowed the first 10,000 fans onto the field, the notion of watching Jim Tressel and his troops practice against themselves was not enough to lure more than 4-5 thousand fans to the ?Shoe on a work night.
