Though 2 days doesn't sound like a lot, I can attest that it is significant. In HS I had a friend that missed 3 days and had to wait the 3 days of acclimation, and he definetly was behind for awhile. Those first couple days with pads on are a blast first off. Second, there just aren't a plethora of full go practices with pads on before the season. Each practice is an opportunity...one that another wideout, say Duron Carter or TWash might take advantage of. Watching the other WR's play while he runs will hopefully be motivation for him, because I think he can be a vital player for us early on.

Sorry, I didn't see any of these hands or mouths things you guys are talking about either. Guess I need to keep watching it.

Intense practices loom as hitting begins

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

With five days of NCAA-mandated acclimatization practices behind it, Ohio State dived into the deep end of preseason camp yesterday with the first day of full-contact practice.

Based on preseason tragedies that occurred several years ago, including the heat-stroke death of former OSU All-American Korey Stringer in the Minnesota Vikings' camp, the acclimatization period enacted in 2003 makes sense, coach Jim Tressel said.

But to find his team, he and his coaches must take the clamps off this week.

"You really do grind it up," Tressel said. "You've got a lot (of the offensive and defensive formations and plays) in, and you'll really start paring back a little bit and start working on some things.

"There will be a lot more contact. It will be the most physical week, much more physical than the third week, because that third week, if you get someone bruised pretty good, you might lose them for (opening) game week."

For instance, starting left guard Justin Boren, who suffered what sources called a mild knee sprain Friday, has time to heal before the opener. But his injury is an example of why the coaches hold their breath at this point. When the action is live and 10 or more starting jobs are up for grabs, the hitting can be fierce.

"As I've been saying all along, we need guys healthy, guys practicing, guys understanding how physical it is," Tressel said. "This will be a big week for us."

The NCAA also ordered in 2003 that teams not conduct consecutive days of two-a-day practices. So the Buckeyes will go twice Monday, once Tuesday, twice Wednesday and so forth, capped by a scrimmage on Saturday.

"That's nine practices; that's a bunch," Tressel said. "Normally in the spring we have 15 over a month. We're going to have nine a week. The growth there has got to be significant."

Try imagining a different cylindrical object in her hand, close to her mouth.
