Suggestions For New Television

I definitely see what you're saying. I was worried about the tv brand at first, but it seemed to get fairly decent overall reviews and really good bang for the buck reviews. I'm actually pretty happy with the tv so far. Improvement is there, just not the big jump that I expected. Plus,I'm a lot happier with balancing out my purchase with the home theatre and blue ray player.

I might upgrade in a year or two but after the watch (and putting in a roof deck), I really had to stay within that thousand dollar budget, so it was either go all-in on the tv or balance things out and maybe upgrade the tv (which I think will be the least permanent component) next year.

What is the refresh rate on the old TV vs the new? That makes a difference, especially when there is fast motion on the screen.

New is 120hz. For the price of a 240hz LED, I would have gone with a large plasma, but then again either of those options would have precluded buying the new home theatre and blue ray player. The old was plasma, so I assume it was 600hz. I guess with the jump to 1080 and Blue Ray, I expected the same kind of "wow" factor that I experienced when I made the jump from a 27" analog tv to 42" high def and a high def cable box.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the tv if it lasts, and the picture overall seems to be a slight improvement although it's hard to tell not having them side-by-side. If it doesn't last, I have very little sunk into it.

So our Christmas present to each other this year is going to be a new TV for me. (HA!) My philosophy is "Go big or go home." Of course, we don't have the space for much over 50", so that's probably what I'll aim for. But after that, I'm pretty clueless. From the posts above, it looks like I'll want a plasma. The wife said it's good for rooms with artificial light, like in my basement. She also heard about this "smart TV" stuff. Wireless connections and stuff. That's probably what I'll need to do. But it will be a culture shock from my current TV that is just a TV. (It's connected to a cable input and to the dvd/vcr, and that's it. It doesn't make phone calls or connect to Netflix or any other internet, or have apps or cook my dinner or remote start the cars or shave strokes off my golf score.)

Any other advice?

Best advice is go shopping and look at the options. Get an idea of the brand and model you like and do some research on the web to make sure it is what you want and find the best price.

I generally use CNet and AVS Forums to review products that I am interested in, and browse Slickdeals.net for good deals. I just snagged a 60inch LG 3D Smart TV last weekend at $1299 and it's normal price is $1699 and after one week I am very pleased.

Picked up a 60" Samsung plasma from HHGregg yesterday. Price matched Best Buy to $750, then signed up for emails to a junk account and got 10% from hhG. $675 sits me just fine until the 4K TVs become a little more affordable. So far, I'm loving it.
