Stupid two point conversions (SimpLLLLLe Jim loves 'em, and so does James Franklin)

Mike McCarthy is a moron. No wonder Aaron Rodgers didn't like him. First he goes for two fake punts in his own territory and both fail. The second one came with the team down by 12 in the 4th quarter - wouldn't have fooled a peewee team.

But that wasn't all! The Cowboys scored to get within 9 points with about 5 minutes left and what does he do? He goes for two! They failed and it remained a two score game, so the late TD they got after it didn't matter.

Holy shit! Dallas got an onside kick and won on the last play, 40-39. They bailed the fat man out.

As a lifelong GB fan I wholeheartedly second Aaron Rodgers' feelings on Mccarthy

Arkansas trails Auburn 17-12 in the second quarter. They stupidly go for two - never chase points in the first half - and fail. They score again early in the 3rd quarter to make the score 20-18 Auburn, go for two again and fail.

After the first failure the second one isn't as dumb but if he just kicks the damn thing twice it's 20-20. Fast forward to the last minute of the game. Arkansas now leads, but it's only 28-27 because they flushed two points earlier.

Auburn kicks a field goal to win it 30-28.

They just can't help themselves. K-State had two field goals then scored a TD in the final minute of the first half to go up 12-0. You know what they did next.

Midway through the 3rd quarter and 10 Okie Lite points later it's 12-10.

Okie Lite storms back to lead 20-12 in the 4th but K-State gets a TD with 2 minutes left. The XP will tie...oh, that's right. They went for two in the first half for no good reason.

Trailing 20-18 the now-needed two point conversion...fails.

Penn State going for 2 down 35-13 with 10 minutes left in the game. Maybe not stupid per se, but what was the point exactly?

Think of it this way, they need three TDs (18 pts) and 4 additional points. This can be done by two XPs and a 2pt, or by two 2pt’s. If you kick XPs on the first two and wait for the 2pt on the third then you don’t give yourself an extra chance to get the four points if you miss the first 2pt you try.

There was another STPC last Saturday. Arkansas scored to get within a point of Mizzou at 46-47. They had a successful 2-point conversion to take the lead, but Mizzou had 43 seconds and 3 timeouts.

When you take the lead on somebody in the last minute like that, you make them desperate to get a FG. If the game were still tied, Mizzou was more likely to play somewhat more conservatively, making sure they avoid a turnover since they’d have a chance in OT. Mizzou ran 6 plays, used all 3 timeouts, and kicked a 32-yard FG as time ran out to win 50-48.

Whenever there are more than 20 or 30 seconds left, taking a 1-point lead with a 2-point conversion doesn’t guarantee a win, it just guarantees that the opponent will do all it can to score. If your 2-point conversion fails, you’ll have time if your onside kick succeeds, but that’s against tougher odds.

Without having seen that particular game I could see a coach going for two there if he thinks his team is spent and OT is worse odds than going for two.

Doesn't appear to have been much defense played in that one. Maybe that was his thought process, but it obviously backfired.

Thread has been dormant in 2021 but I gotta bump it for this one.

Virginia Tech gets a false start, up 22-21 on Notre Dame in the 3rd. They go for two anyway from the 8 yard line with predictable results. :bonk:

I thought you might have brought up Michigan's 2-point attempt. May not be stupid at the end of the game. We'll see. Michigan was up 13-7, and scored a touchdown to go up 19-7. 2-point attempt unsuccessful. Nebraska scored a touchdown and then another to go up 20-19. 2-point conversion of their own put them up by 3. If all goes the same, Nebraska should have been up 1.

Michigan has since scored another touchdown. Game still has 9 minutes remaining, so we'll see.
