I believe those are called radiators.

As was mentioned earlier, it could just be dirt or even paint that is being heated and causing the smell. If you just started renting the apartment, then it might have been recently painted, which would be my first guess.

If the smell persists then you should contact your landlord.

We survived! Haha. I love this fourm. I can ask about ANYTHING, and I get a lot of good helpful responses, and then I get even more smart ass funny responses...and I'm not sure which type I like more.

If the paint is peeling off of it... DO NOT contact the landlord.
