Stupid question about heat

So in my appartment there are actually like heaters. Like metal ones near the windows that you have to turn a knob, and the pipes make noise, and then the metal rings get hot. Is this done by steam or gas or what? I'm asking cuz it smells funny.

is this the first time you have turned them on this year? that could explain the smell. if not, make sure there isnt anything too close. maybe you have a fire?

But I think you guys are using Steam heat likely by way of a gas Water heater. Your fine. Just don't touch the thing when its on. The funny smell is likely just dust burning off.

turn the heater off, and let it cool, if it has a "flush" or release valve empty the excess water and then try again, there could be stagnant water there causing the smell as it heats up.

If it is a natural gas heater, strike it several times with an axe to make a hole in it. this will give the smell a place to get out.
