Stupid family delays flight - blames airline..

Having kids is one of the best experiences of my life (and continues to be) and you are correct that to some degree, decisions are made for you.

But flying with kids is not rocket science. My kids have flown and flown at a young age. My oldest flew from Phoenix to Ohio when we moved back to Ohio, when he was 1.5 months old. Take off and descent, she simply breast fed and used a binky. When they were older and flew, maybe still not old enough to comprehend how to handle the pressure change on their own, we simply gave them a stick of gum to chew on at takeoff. Again, not rocket science to overcome the problem with pressure change and it also "taught" them how to handle the pressure change on their own by simply swallowing.

While I do agree that some decisions are made for you once you become a parent, I have also come to realize that most "problems" have simple solutions. The problem that I have noticed is that too many parents have their heads so far up their ass, that the jaws of life would be required to extricate their heads so that they could see the simply solution.

The worst I experieced on a plane was a 2 year old crying/screaming. The idiotic parenting skills that I witnessed to try to console the boy was the mother smacking the kid and telling him to be quiet. Brilliant move Einstein parent!! Just what a scared confused 2 year old needs.

I was on a flight from Chicago to London and there was a Mexican family on board with two young kids. The youngest being about 2.

He cried for 5 hours straight.

If I could have, I would have gone Flight 93 on them.

And probably been escorted off the plane, but by the police. If parents are expected to control children, then people need to let them do it.

Let me defend my friends here. They are the best parents (not that I'm biased or anything!). I really admire how they're raising their children. They fly with their girls a lot, and this was a rare incident in which one of them had a bad experience. This is not them being bad parents. They even have an elaborate system in which they keep their kids occupied during the flight. This time it just didn't fly, to the displeasure of everyone on their flight.

That being said, screaming children need to be tranquilized or given a shot of whiskey -- or shoved in the cargo hold. :biggrin:

I have traveled tons with my children... and I am as compassionate as anyone for those with kids while traveling... but bottom line, you are responsible for your children... and if you can't control them, then you accept the consequences... the airlines needed to make a business decision... and I agree with it...

I also fault the parents for making the airlines make the decision... the parents should have removed themselves rather than forcing the airlines hand...

A great trick when traveling with children... get to the airport with plenty of time... run up and down the concourses with them... exhaust them... so when they get on the plane... they're out... and wake them before descent... giving them a hard candy to suck on...

The only think better than what AirTrans offered them... was 3 round trip tickets anywhere... on any other airlines

There really are two different issues here:
1. recalcitrant children whose parents fail to restrain and seat; and
2. loud or screaming children

That flight could not take off b/c of no. 1, not because of no. 2.

No. 2, like it or not, is always a possibility on any flight. That's why it is called public transportation. However, I could see airlines adding relatively sound-proof seating areas for loud children and the mentally handicapped who cannot stay quiet in flight.

I think they work great. You can listen to music and hear virtually no backround noise from the outside. A lot of the time when I am flying I will just put on some instrumental music and read, and it really blocks out all the other stuff going on. You can also plug them into the airplane sound system to watch the movie, or listen to their music. I think the Bose ones are pretty pricey $2-300 but I know some other companies make them as well.
