Students Shorted NC Tix, claims ESPN

first off what does the reselling of tickets have anything to do with the topic anyways. even if no student resold their tickets we would still be in the same boat so putting it on the students because they resell their tickets is pretty lame if you ask me. i attended all the games. i have near no money yet chose the michigan game over the fact that im on a college loan and working while im in class and still wont make rent this next month. i can see how some people could buy tix and resell them but i dont do it so it has nothing to do with me personally yet i was denied any information or opportunity to obtain tickets to glendale. obviously i dont expect every student to go and i like the current lottery system if it would move on the basis of rank and such but its absurd to just sweep the tickets basically under the rug and let the students unknowingly just walk by the opportunity to attend the game.

Reselling tickets has everything to do with this topic since there are a limited number of tickets. Students selling their tickets deprive other students, and alumni of their chance to get a ticket. I have no problem losing a lottery to other students that intend to go to Glendale, but losing to some asshole trying to turn a profit is complete bullshit. Oh and please, spare me the Economical debate, I doubt anyone here would appreciate it if the OSU ticket office decided to experiment with market equilibrium.

I also do not understand the sudden "uproar" of the students over the quiet lottery. Where was the uproar for last years Fiesta Bowl or away games of years past*? Despite a Block O email, keeping things quiet is the best way to avoid massive lines, and ensure (hopefully) that the students that really want tickets do get them. I found out pretty easily sophomore year via email everything thing I needed to know about getting away and bowl game ticket information. It baffles me that a self proclaimed "superfan" (in reference to a letter to the editor in the lantern today) can spend four years at OSU and not have an inkling of knowledge about getting tickets like these.

* FYI the student ticket allotment was exactly the same for last years game, and in comparison 500 less than that of Notre Dame's students.

Students say Ohio State shorted them championship game tickets
Friday, December 1, 2006

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio State students complained the university did not set aside enough tickets for them when it divvied up its allotment for the national championship game.

Students got 1,100 tickets for the Jan. 8 football game. The university set aside the largest amount _ about 5,000 _ for donors and sponsors.

About 6,000 of Ohio State's nearly 52,000 students entered a lottery this week to try to win the right to buy one of the student tickets.

"I think it's totally inexcusable that only 1,000 tickets were made available to students," senior Paige Shannon said. "Without the students there wouldn't be any football at all, yet we seem to get the least amount of tickets."

The rest of the school's 16,000 tickets for the game in Glendale, Ariz., were divided among various groups, including the athletic department, university administration, the alumni association and the marching band.

"The Department of Athletics tries to be as fair as possible in meeting the huge demand from, among others, students, faculty, staff, trustees, alumni, donors, media, boosters and season ticket holders. All of them are important to our athletic programs and our university," said Athletic Director Gene Smith.

The distribution this year matches what was done in 2003, when OSU got about the same number of tickets for its national championship game against Miami, Ohio State ticketing director Bill Jones said.

"No group will get the amount of tickets that they are requesting," he said. "Between the students, staff and (booster) club members, we will have far more requests than tickets available."

The University of Southern California, the Buckeyes' likely opponent, also will earmark about 1,000 tickets for students.

"Only about 1,000 students will probably be able to go for us, too, and if it's of any comfort to the upset students in Columbus, there are lots of sympathetic students over here on the West Coast," USC ticketing director Debra Duncan said.

Students who didn't win the chance to buy the $185 tickets also could get into the game by purchasing a university-sponsored tour package, at a cost of around $2,000. About 500 students took advantage of the offer, according to the athletic department.

"They want us to be the 'best fans in the land,' and I guess we had better be because they will only be sending a thousand of us," senior Jeff Sferro said.

And without alums (ex-students Paige) football would have disappeared long before your dumbass was born...Cry me a river.

If you don't take care of the students while they are there, why should they ever give back as alums?

I haven't given one red cent to Ohio State since I graduated, for alumni dues or otherwise, and have no intention to do so. I'm still bitter over the ticket fiasco when I was a freshman, and they dicked us in 1998.

haha like i said even if nobody resold their tickets the students still would have got the shaft so once again it has nothing to do with the end result. and it should baffle you as to why the guy never gained knowledge of the ticket sales because NOBODY REALLY DID. i never was sent any knowledge of what was going on as a die hard ohio state fan and season ticket holder yet a junior at columbus state that attended osu their freshman year gets an email from their former RA as to tickets going on sale. now please explain that one to me. current students are not allotted the opportunity to purchase tickets but former students from osu at columbus state(in this instance a ND fan) get info from their former RA. under your philosophy i guess they should never inform anybody of future season ticket sales and bowl sales so "true" buckeyes can hear about when they are going on sale by word and assumption. that way students can get screwed over and the 80 year old alum that has been living in oregon yet attending games his whole life can get screwed as well just because he was on the the "inside" of the ticket sales. we might as well start making this some covert operation mission impossible style.

as a student and season ticket holder i personally think the ticketing dept went under the rug with the whole issue only to keep booster and alum happy more than anything else. i find it incredibly ironic that the ticket office, which sends out emails about everything and keeps all the students informed as to when tickets go on sale, for how much, and in what manner, sent out NO emails. i was curious how it was going to work so i emailed them monday and it turned out the lottery was 8-5 monday in which of those 6000 that knew only heard by word of mouth. thats already unfair right there if students dont even have an equal opportunity amongst each other to gain a ticket. and 6000 students showed up......please if people would have actually known about the tickets going on sale there would have been 15000+ waiting in line to get into the lottery

The athletic department not sending out emails didn't deny anybody the chance to enter the lottery. The information was posted on the athletic department website and buckeyeplanet a full week before lottery.

I'm a student and I started checking the website the day after the game. None of the ticket office employees followed me around denying me internet access. Lotteries like this always happen a short time after the teams find out where they are going so that people have the best chance of getting airfare, accomadations, etc. If students waited over a week after the game to inquire about the lottery, they have no one to blame but themselves. The information was there, they just didn't take advantage of it.

I truly feel sorry for any student who wanted to attend the NC game and happened to miss out on the lottery. I couldn't care less about the student who missed out on the lottery and was planning to resell the ticket for a profit.

For any student who really wanted to attend the NC game and missed out on the lottery and right now he/she is really pissed about it, again I completely understand. I agree with anyone in that boat who believes that it isn't fair. Unfortunately, life isn't fair!

I am an alumnus (two degrees) from OSU. I was upset when I saw alumni tickets for the scUM game for sale on ebay, where these tickets were advertised as being won in the Michigan lottery. I was in the same position of wanting to go to the game, lost out in the lottery, and someone who won the lottery was using the winning of the lottery simply as a way to make money. Again, that wasn't fair to me...an alum who would have used the ticket and gone to the game rather than succumb to the worshipping of the almighty dollar and sell it for a profit...but life isn't fair.

ok then i am denied information to ticket sales. the ticket office sends out emails to the student body for season ticket purchases in advance every year. this year for the NC game all that was sent out was a package that included airfare, hotel accomodations, and the actual ticket for more money than i was willing to spend. i checked the athletic office and the only notice i saw was one for alumni to purchase bowl tickets in their own lottery. i unlike many others sifted through the osu website and my emails right after the game instead of going out in a drunken stupor and still saw nothing about ticket sales. after trying to look for information i had to make the effort to ask the ticket office as to when tickets were going on sale and it was too late. the ticket office provides a service in which they distribute information and tickets. obviously not this time considering the overwhelming majority of the student body was left in the dark about the sales and the people that get hearsay are the ones that benefit from the whole ordeal. i personally hate a lot of students that go to osu and i dont resell my tickets however they are free to do as they will but when fans that are willing to go to glendale and pay the fee straightup to go there have no idea what is going on but an osu freshman that drops out and is a ND fan gets an email from a former RA thats really just a clusterfuck now isnt it. bitch i will but if it gets the athletic department and ticket office to get their asses in gear and do a better job of getting information out equally and efficiently to the student body and alot more tickets than that of 1/73 of the stadium being filled with students than i have every reason to bitch for improvement of the system.

You're probably right. They couldn't give a shit less. But that only makes me say "fuck 'em" even more.

The university (gasp!) sort of got what they deserved when the shit hit the fan on boosters. You pander to these guys time and time again, and they start to think they can get away with that shit.

Apparently, they haven't learned their lesson yet.

You're acting like they buried the information and you had to know the exact url or something. The info wasn't difficult to find. There was a link to the information all day Tuesday at the top of the osu website under news. Also, through the end of the lottery, there was a link on the front page of the athletic department's official site. Again, not difficult.

Also, why would you think they would update the site immediately after the game? I seriously doubt they had a lot of IT people working at that time, nor did they probably have all of the information from the bowl. I checked Sunday. No info. Checked again Monday, no info. Checked Tuesday and there it was. I guess I don't understand why you waited over a week to email the ticket office, you could have just as easily sent it the Monday after the game.

Perhaps I should chalk it up to a generational thing (I'm a lot older than most OSU students.) I probably only check my OSU email once or twice a week and don't rely on it for anything. Also, in my previous years at OSU (last was 2002) I don't remember receiving a lot a emails about tickets, so it didn't even occur to me to wait for one.

thats very possible. the only link is saw on the osu site was the alum lottery and nothing about the student lottery. i didnt check the athletic site because i usually only see upcoming events and scores on there so i didnt check it. i did go to the official ticket office site(where the public and students actually purchase tickets) and there was nothing on there either. called 1-800-GOBUCKS and got nothing but a busy signal. the ticket office sends out emails to students for most every major ticket exchange(most bball and fball). i got an email for bball season tickets, football season tickets, and various other athletic related emails. they also sent the bowl package email so i just dont see why they couldnt have just sent out a simple email to osu students to keep them informed like they usually always do.

Yeah I do sell my tickets b/c I don't NEED them when I'm on the field. You think I'm gonna give away tickets that cost me over $5K?!!! I make NO money on them whatsoever FYI. Whomever buys them gets them for less than what they would have to pay for those Club Seats!

Not even for the ones that actually have intention to go and have never scalped a ticket in their life?

They should distribute tickets based on student rank, past ticket purchases, etc. It is utter bullshit that I've bought student tickets the last four years, been to six away games, and lose the lottery to some asshole that wants to make a profit.

If that's true then yes, you should have tickets, but the system is a lottery! Nobody is guaranteed tickets when you go into a lottery system. So, bitch to your fellow students who are selling them, not the system.
