Student Tasered at campus forum for Kerry

ScriptOhio

Everybody is somebody else's weirdo.
A university student with a history of taping his own practical jokes was Tasered by campus police and arrested after loudly and repeatedly trying to ask U.S. Senator John Kerry questions during a campus forum.
Andrew Meyer, 21, spent a night in jail before his release Tuesday morning. His attorney, Robert Griscti, did not return messages seeking comment.
Videos of the Monday night incident, posted on several Web sites and played repeatedly on television news, show officers pulling Meyer away from the microphone after he asks Kerry about impeaching President Bush and whether he and Bush were both members of the secret society Skull and Bones at Yale University.

I guess I'm not sure how I feel about that video. The kid was obviously not a threat to anyone. Was asking a question that Kerry likely could not answer with a straight face? Probably. But I wasn't aware that we were a police state where speaking your mind peacefully can get you subdued by taser and arrested.

thats a great point. kerry tells those cops to stop and he is a fucking "hero" instead he just does nothing. i hope this kid lawyers up and sues. those cops had no reason to restrain him.

What would have been better would be Kerry intervening and getting tasered him self.

That would be hil-fucking-arious

So much for free speech in an academic setting. UF President Machen has a real mess on his hands with this piece of stupidity.

An example of SEC speed? As in, too quick on the draw.

I kind of disagree...

I hate to say this, but... he was fighting with the cops long before he got tased... and... I realize the "free speech" implications here... but... I don't think anyone had any motivation to shut him up...

This was all pretty intentional on his part, he made damned sure the whole thing was taped...

My take, attention whore... don't feel bad, he got exactly what he wanted.

Wasn't the whole reason they were apprehending him because he went beyond his allotted time for asking a question?

Kerry would have come out smelling like a rose had he just told the cops to lay off.

Besides, wasn't it an open forum for him to ask questions?

In addition to footage shot by two local news cameras and what appear to be a variety of individual camera-phones, Meyer apparently contributed to the thorough documentation of his dramatic arrest. "The student who was Tasered had handed a camera to another person who was with him before he went up to speak," said Steve Orlando, director of the university's news bureau

In the police report of the incident, officers state that Meyer calmed down once in the squad car, even joking with them and saying, "I am not mad at you guys; you didn't do anything wrong."

At any rate... I'm sure he didn't expect to get tased.... and... but... if he was making a political statement, or pulling a stunt... he got what he wanted... he certainly didn't wait his turn, ask his question and then sit down... he was there to cause a stir.

Fighting with the cops?? I have seen the video and never saw him "fighting" with the cops. Was he still talking when his time was over and resisting being asked to step down, yes. Did the cops have the right to tell him he was done and possibly even escort him out, probably, but taser the kid?? That was excessive. He was not physically attacking any of them. His actions were not threatening. There was like 4-5 of them and they were not in any immediate risk for harm.
