BUFORD, Ga. (WXIA) -- A Gwinnett County family is baffled that their teenager was disciplined after he reported to his teacher that he accidently brought a small pocket knife to school.
"I hate that Jack felt like he did was he was supposed to do, and for him these are dire consequences," said Angie Persyn, the teen's mother.
Thirteen-year-old Jack Persyn was at Chess Club before the start of classes at Lanier Middle School in Gwinnett County when he discovered an inch-and-a-half long knife in a bag he brought to school. The military style bag was given to him as a Christmas gift from his aunt, who bought it at a yard sale. cont.

The Buford, GA school board sounds a lot like the NCAA.

Exactly. Zero Tolerance usually comes from the Board of Education which is voted into power. Zero Tolerence policies usually come in to play when either said school district or one near it had it's ass sued by some whiney parents who think their kid is an angel, and sue because their kid did do something that should have gotten them suspended.

Presumably they are adults too... and in charge of... well... someone.

I think I carried a pocket knife to school most days starting in the 3rd or 4th grade. I remember the teacher having to borrow it on a few occasions as well.

Life lesson, kid. Pay more attention.

Maybe that's one less person later in life who will accidentally bring something the clogs up the TSA line at the airport.

Eh, I could say a lot about that as I'll be flying out of CMH again in a week, but that's a different thread.

Stupid call by the school, but zero-tolerance policies create this kind of mess. Should have just taken the knife, told him thanks for being honest and turning it in, and let the kid get on with his day.
