Student suspended for knife at school

Some claim that the delicious filling of the PopTart qualified it as "loaded," but I say those people have not had a PopTart; not much ammo in there. Oh, and I think the school offered counseling to the traumatized after that, too. For reals.

We are doomed.

Dad: This Picture of My Son Holding a Gun Triggered a Visit from NJ Police, Family Services

7a3u2uzu-465x620.jpg

Did this photograph spark a police action that tried to enter a New Jersey home without a warrant? That's the story being told on a website dedicated to 'Open Carry' in the state of Delaware. The title of the story, "The fight has officially been brought to my front door."

The young man in the photo is the 11-yr-old son of Shawn Moore. The gun is a .22 rifle, a copy of the AR-15, but a 22 caliber. The photo was posted on Facebook by a proud father. That Facebook posting apparently triggered an anonymous call to New Jersey's Department of Youth and Family Services (DYFS). On Friday night, March 15th, two representatives from the state's social services office (along with four local police officers) came to the Moore home and demanded to see the family's firearms.

According to Moore's lawyer, Evan Nappen (an attorney with considerable expertise in NJ's very strict gun laws), the situation was "outrageous."

Here's what Moore alleges on the Delaware open carry forum:

  • NJ's Department of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) came to his home, accompanied by police officers. They claimed to be responding to a call about a photo of a young boy holding a firearm. (photo above)
  • Without a search warrant, DYFS demanded entry into Moore's home and access to all of his firearms. Moore was not initially there, but his wife called him.
  • With his lawyer listening to the exchange on the phone with police and DFYS, Moore denied entry to his home and access to his safe where he stores his guns.
  • When Moore requested the name of the DFYS representative, she refused to give it to him.
  • After threatening to "take my kids," the police and Family Services worker left - "empty handed and seeing nothing."
In an exclusive interview with TheBlaze, Mr. Nappen - the attorney who was listening to the entire incident via Moore's speaker phone - added more details:
.../cont/...
Always good to see family services going above & beyond to protect children in danger. :so:

Seriously though kudos to a dad who not only understands his rights but is willing to demand they be observed.

.../snip/...
TheBlaze reached out to DYFS to confirm Moore?s account of the incident. The local office that covered the Carneys Point, NJ, area where Shawn Moore and his family live, would not respond to any questions from us. In fact, after our call was transferred to a 'supervisor' named Lynette we were directed to the Trenton offices. When we requested a correct spelling of Lynette's last name, she started to spell it and then suddenly stopped, saying, "I'm not comfortable giving you my name." When we asked for a phone number to the Trenton office, Lynette told us "Google it. Goodbye."
To be honest that final paragraph grinds me more than any other part of the story. Lynette needs to be fired asap.

West Virginia 8th Grader Arrested After Refusing to Take Off NRA Shirt at School

A West Virginia 8th grader was arrested on April 18 for obstruction and "disturbing the education process" after he engaged in a heated exchange with a teacher and refused to remove his NRA T-shirt.

Jared Marcum, 14, of Logan told the Associated Press on April 19th that he was on a cafeteria line when a teacher demanded that he remove his NRA T-shirt or wear it inside-out because it featured a gun, which the teacher insisted violated the middle-school's dress policy.

Marcum refused, stating it was his First Amendment right to voice his support for the Second Amendment by wearing a T-shirt with an image of a gun and the words "Protect Your Right" on it.

According to the AP, Marcum was sent to the principal's office where he was subsequently arrested and taken to jail.

.../cont/...

We'll have to wait for the rest of the story. It's possible that he was arrested for something that he said/did during his argument with the teacher.

The terrorists have won.

One of my cub scouts, mind you an 8-year old boy, was sent to counselling at school because he _talked_ about learning how to shoot a 22 rifle. His dad took him to a shooting range for instruction.

Even though I grew up with guns in the house all the time (dad was a conservation officer in Ohio), when I was 8 I know that I was pretty damn excited when I got to shoot anything beyond a BB gun. Glad I grew up in the '70s and not now. Lordy... with as much shooting as I did when I was growing up, I would have been sent up the river.

Florida Teen Girl Charged With Felony After Science Experiment Goes Bad

Kiera Wilmot got good grades and had a perfect behavior record. She wasn't the kind of kid you'd expect to find hauled away in handcuffs and expelled from school, but that's exactly what happened after an attempt at a science project went horribly wrong.
On 7 a.m. on Monday, the 16 year-old mixed some common household chemicals in a small 8 oz water bottle on the grounds of Bartow High School in Bartow, Florida. The reaction caused a small explosion that caused the top to pop up and produced some smoke. No one was hurt and no damage was caused.
According to WTSP, Wilmot told police that she was merely conducting a science experiment. Though her teachers knew nothing of the specific project, her principal seems to agree.
"She made a bad choice. Honestly, I don't think she meant to ever hurt anyone," principal Ron Pritchard told the station. "She wanted to see what would happen [when the chemicals mixed] and was shocked by what it did. Her mother is shocked, too."
After the explosion Wilmot was taken into custody by a school resources officer and charged with possession/discharge of a weapon on school grounds and discharging a destructive device. She will be tried as an adult.
She was then taken to a juvenile assessment center. She was also expelled from school and will be forced to complete her diploma through an expulsion program.
Polk County School released the following statement:
"Anytime a student makes a bad choice it is disappointing to us. Unfortunately, the incident that occurred at Bartow High School yesterday was a serious breach of conduct. In order to maintain a safe and orderly learning environment, we simply must uphold our code of conduct rules. We urge our parents to join us in conveying the message that there are consequences to actions. We will not compromise the safety and security of our students and staff."
So, sorry kids. Don't try any extracurricular science projects on school grounds, especially if they could result in anything resembling an explosion.
Update: Riptide spoke to the Polk County School District about why they felt expulsion was a fair punishment for Wilmot. Their response: kids should learn that "there are consequences to their actions."
We've also obtained the police report from the incident. It shows that Wilmot was mixing toilet bowl cleaner and aluminum foil. Read the full update and the police report here.
