St. John's (or the next NY college to recruit their home territory worth a damn) will be formidable. Look at West Virginia. They're pretty good thanks to all the NY/NJ guys they have leading the way. Just think of how bad they'd suck if somebody in NYC gave them a reason to stay home. I mean, they went to Morgantown instead. That tells me it's not going to take too much to turn that around.

nice first recruiting class for Lavin....

no NY/NJ kids....but a pretty strong class across the board

St. John's parts ways with coach Steve Lavin after five seasons

St. John's has parted ways with Steve Lavin, the school announced on Friday.

The 50-year old spent five seasons as coach of the Red Storm and had an overall record of 81-55 with trips to the NCAA Tournament this season and also in 2011. Lavin was the coach at UCLA from 1996-03 before joining ESPN as a broadcaster for seven years prior to taking over at St. John's in 2010.

Dumb move by St John's IMO. Lavin isn't a top-20 coach, but then St John's won't ever again have a top-20 coach.

They'll be very lucky to duplicate Lavin's success over the next 5 seasons.
Success? 2 tourney appearances in 5 years, both 1 & done exits, takes luck to duplicate at St John's? Remember his first tourney appearance was thanks to having a veteran team handed to him when he arrived. I think Lavin had a very average performance at St. John's. It may be challenging to build a program in the Big East but Lavin didn't do anything special there.

I think I said Lavin isn't a great coach, rather that the school isn't likely to be able to attract anyone as good in future. You seem to suggest they will be able to do better; we'll see who's right.

New York Daily News reported earlier today that St. John's alum Chris Mullin will be the new head coach. Interesting hire as Mullin has never been a coach at any level but has significant NBA front office experience.

St. John's hires Chris Mullin as new coach, replacing Steve Lavin

St. John's has hired Chris Mullin as its basketball coach, replacing fired Steve Lavin, sources said Monday.

A press conference is expected Wednesday to announce the hire, which fills an opening created when Lavin was let go Friday. Mullin has spent the past few seasons as an adviser in the Sacramento Kings' front office and has served as general manager of the Golden State Warriors.

He has no head coaching experience, but sources said that St. John's believes Mullin provides a blueprint similar to what Iowa State had when it hired Fred Hoiberg in 2010.

Hoiberg also had no head coaching experience when he took the job at his alma mater. Mullin, a Brooklyn native, was a first-team All-American at St. John's and led the Red Storm to the 1985 Final Four.

Mullin was the seventh overall pick by Golden State in the 1985 NBA Draft and was a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic Dream Team.
