High School Steubenville Big Red (Merged)

That was a special year locally. Buckeye went to the state title, Wellsville went to the finals, and had the Red not choked against West Branch, they would've met Clyde in the finals. That 1994 Big Red team, im my mind, was the one of a kind.

Always good to know their are people around the valley that pull for the Big Red.

Again, good luck to cousin and I hope to see Buckeye get back.

My Junior year, yep. Actually they beat Piqua in the semi's and lost to Chardon in the finals. Chardon ran the option better than any high school team I have ever seen, and better than some college teams. They just dont have the athletes anymore, and Poblish seems like he cant change his style of coaching. Even high school football has changed too much for the fullback dive to work every play, especially when you dont have any size or speed on your team. My cousin is the starting QB. He is probably the best athlete on the team, and he's only about average. You are correct though, it is sad to see them fall so far.

I will be goin back to the finals this year, hope to see Big Red up there again.

Is that back when Billy West played?

He graduated the year before. Chet Pobolish was the RB the year they went to state. When West was there, I believe they were division 3. Got beat his junior year by Steuby in the first round of the playoffs, and got beat by West Branch in the first round his senior year. He broke his leg in that West Branch game.

I cant remember if BL was division 3 at the time, or maybe Steuby was division 2.....one or the other.

Billy West was a stud...Curtis Martin may not be where he is today if Billy decided to concentrate on football.

Pobolish was one fast white guy...he did well at Emporia State too.

I haven't seen the Big Red play, but from hearing, they sound very good.

In the playoffs I think their toughest challenge is going to be Columbus St. Francis DeSales. Who is currently 5-0.

Good luck to them on their season. I'm happy they aren't in our division.

They beat Desales in the state final last year. Wasnt much of a contest, cept for the weather making the field icy and keeping it close through the first half. Damn was it cold that morning

Yea well, they faced a DeSales team that normally lost 4 games and still made the playoffs. This year DeSales hasn't lost a game yet. I don't think they will have 4 loses this year. They are a much better team.

Wasnt saying that to prove that Steuby would kick their ass this year, was just stating that they played in the finals.
