Stephen Jackson/NBA ban (merged)

when they are doing their "job", they wear proper attire. while they are "off the clock" they should be allowed to wear whatever the fuck they want. i dont know about this being racist, but its just wrong to me. i dont know how they can say what is tacky and what isn't. this is ridiculous. the nba has much bigger problems than jewlery. get a grip stern.

I think Mr. Stern was saying that when you are "on the clock" you must dress like a professional. But I totally agree that there is alot of more important issues that Mr. Stern should worry about then how people dress...more like how they act...

Actually, I don't think anybody (maybe scooter did) even read Stephen Jackson's comments. I was expecting the same slop everyone else is assuming he said, but he didn't say what any of you are alleging at all. Go read the article and see what he said.

His problem was not with suits, it was with gold chains. He senses that the attack is cultural. He agrees with the commissioner in that too many players dress down and look unprofessional.

Stephen Jackson has the kind of game that is giving the NBA a reputation for being too close to street ball, but he's probably correct in his position. Note also that he stated that he would comply with the statute.

when they are "on the clock" they are dressed in a uniform.

So you are saying that when they are getting off the bus and walking into an arena (their place of work) it is okay to look like a bum? Do you show up to work in shitty clothes or inappropriate cloths and then change in the bathroom at you work?

There is nothing wrong with asking these guys to have a proffesinal look when they show up for a game. It is a very relaxed set of standards anyway. Stern has even said that you can wear jeans. Most of the players agree that some of the guys have gotten to dressed down recently.

I think it is a step in the right direction. When you are getting paid what they are, how can you complain about an actually relaxed dress code. Nowhere (from what I've read) did it say they have to wear suits. Whats wrong with the league trying to promote a professional image instead of the "thug" image that they currently have? Being in the military, I have to wear a strict uniform and get paid substantially less but you wont hear many of us complaining. Its part of the job, we are not just representing ourselves, but the USAF and the United States of America. I definitely wouldn't want the people work with tho show up in their street clothes. In the NBA, you are not just representing yourself, but also your team and the NBA. I think this is good for the long term. Someone said that "at work" is only on the court, I disagree, it is while on your way to work and even the press interviews after the game. What they do or wear after hours is on them, no one is saying they have to do this at all hours all the time. And No I don't think it is a RACIAL issue. I'm sure there are some Caucasian or foreign players that this will affect just as much

On Monday, the NBA announced in a memo to teams that a dress code will go into effect at the start of the season. Saying players must dress in "business casual" attire, the league banned items such as sleeveless shirts, shorts, sunglasses while indoors, and headphones during team or league business.
It also requires players on the bench who are not in uniform to wear sports jackets, shoes and socks.
And while Stern knows some players will be critical of the policy, he said there was no reason to be, as even jeans are still allowed.

Someone said that about 50% of the people supporting the NBA are African American. have any of y'all been to a game? When I went to a finals game in Sana Antonio vs the Pistons last year there MAY have been 10% African Americans in the crowd

It's obvious they are trying to appeal to more than just the hip hop crowd. Pro basketball's popularity has gone down since the 80s hey day. I think it has more to do with the me-me-me type basketball that is played, and getting away from team basketball. That's why I think the college game is so successful any more, they play team basketball.

afgolfer: what about when they are being interviewed after the game in their towels? you cant actually compare real jobs like yours to grown men playing games for a living. they are paid to play basketball. if representing the nba was such a big deal, allen iverson would have never stepped foot on the court.
