Steinbrenner rips Yankees

Yanks present ring to Steinbrenner | MLB.com: News
Jeter, who grew up in Michigan and whose first Yankees opener was in 1996, jokingly asked the elder Steinbrenner to remove his Ohio State ring.

"He didn't do that -- he took the 2000 ring off and put the new one on," Hal Steinbrenner told reporters earlier. "Jeter is great at breaking the ice in situations like that. My dad looked right at him, pointed right at him, and said, 'Michigan!'"

George Steinbrenner dies ? Longtime Ohio State fan
Uncategorized ? posted by brant parsons on July, 13 2010

Ohio State lost one of its biggest fans today with the news of George Steinbrenner dying at age 80 after suffering a massive heart attack.

Steinbrenner was known best as being the owner of the New York Yankees but his love for Ohio State was always an important part of who he was.

Before becoming American sports? most-famous owner, Steinbrenner was a graduate assistant for Woody Hays at Ohio State, where he earned his Master?s degree. He met his wife in Columbus and though he went on to be an assistant coach at other Big Ten schools (Northwestern and Purdue) he remained a Buckeye at heart.

The band center in Columbus, The Joan Sieg Steinbrenner Band Center, is named for his wife. (He also donated money for the University of Florida band)

The Ohio-born Steinbrenner also received a 2002 doctorate from Ohio State.

The Boss was also very close to Hop Cassady...

The centerpiece of all the keepsakes is the Heisman, resting on a table in the foyer. But next to it, amid the pictures is a framed letter by his boss and longtime friend, Steinbrenner.

"You're one of the greatest players the game of football has ever known and you could write an anthology on not only what you accomplished on the football field but also what you brought to the Buckeye fans," read part of the letter.

Steinbrenner honored Cassady at Legends Field recently. Cassady threw out the first pitch, and a Heisman official presented him with a blown-up photo from his induction.

"I think the world of Hop," says Steinbrenner. "We're very close. He's truly a quality individual."

Steinbrenner also was an avid football fan. He was a graduate assistant under the legendary Woody Hayes in 1954-55 before becoming an assistant coach for one year at Northwestern and one year at Purdue. While at Purdue, he helped coach future Hall of Fame quarterback Len Dawson. Steinbrenner, born in Rocky River, Ohio, remained a lifelong fan of his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes.

As Yankees owner, Steinbrenner annually invited one of his favorite Buckeyes to come to camp and teach baserunning – running back Howard “Pop” Cassady, who won the 1955 Heisman Trophy.

“I don’t know if (Cassady) knew how to teach baserunning, but he was always around Yankees spring training,” Greene said. “He’d keep Pop Cassady around, just to show his respect and admiration.”

Steinbrenner made mark at OSU
Business First of Columbus

The death of New York Yankees owner and former Ohioan George Steinbrenner is being felt all the way inside the ?Shoe at Ohio State University.

Steinbrenner, 80, apparently was felled by a massive heart attack in Tampa, Fla., according to reports. The family of the baseball icon confirmed his death Tuesday.

While Steinbrenner established his sports empire in the Big Apple after leading an investor group to buy the Yankees in 1973, his roots stretch to Ohio State, which he didn?t forget in his philanthropic work. A native of Rocky River outside of Cleveland, Steinbrenner attended Ohio State before receiving a bachelor?s degree from Williams College in 1952. His wife, Joan, is a Columbus native and Ohio State graduate.

In the years Steinbrenner cemented his legacy as the aggressive, ebullient chief of the Yankees, he was spotted on occasion at Buckeyes football and basketball games. The OSU Marching Band in a statement issued Tuesday called the Steinbrenners the ?driving force? behind a marching band facility ? named the Steinbrenner Band Center ? at Ohio Stadium. The couple in 2001 pledged $1.5 million to build the complex inside the landmark Horseshoe and also gave money for student scholarships.

?We will always remember George Steinbrenner?s love of music and his love of the Ohio State University Marching Band,? Jon Waters, assistant band director, said in a statement.

Only five years after Steinbrenner, dubbed The Boss, took over as owner of the Yankees, the team signed the Columbus Clippers as its Triple A affiliate farm team. That relationship lasted for 28 years until the Yankees ended the affiliation in 2006, signing a player development contract with the franchise in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pa.

I was at an OSU basketball game several years ago. Steinbrenner was in his box - all by himself. He looked almost lonely, except that every 15 minutes or so an attractive young lady would appear next to him and they would chat for a few minutes. They did not bring him food, they did not stay beyond a few minutes, and each time it was a different young lady.

And that's all I have to say about that.

George Steinbrenner got a special delivery in his suite before the ceremony celebrating the Yankees 27th World Series championship.

"He was very emotional," the Boss? son and Yankees co-chairman Hal Steinbrenner said.

Jeter told Steinbrenner that he had to take off his Ohio State ring now, but The Boss just pointed at him and said "Michigan." Steinbrenner did his post-graduate work at Ohio State and was an assistant on their 1954 National Championship team. Jeter grew up in Kalamazoo and considered going to the University of Michigan before the Yankees drafted him in 1992. The two Big 10 schools have a long-standing football rivalry.
