Steam?

I am looking to buy Portal and Portal 2 for my dad for his Bday, he likes puzzle type games and figured he would enjoy these games. I played Portal2 on the 360 and loved it...

Now question is, I am buying it for the PC, and it seems I can just register through Stream to buy it. I've never used Steam before (I rarely PC game), so just seeing how many people here use it, and if it's reliable or whatnot? It seems the only way to get these games are using Steam, didn't know how good it is

Steam is an extremely reliable interface, and user friendly.

I don't use it much anymore as I'm a console gamer now but you shouldn't have any problems with it.
