Just to have Laurinitis in at Scum and against the Domers sings high praise of the lad. I can just imagine the LB coach telling him to 'just play your position let the seniors do the playmaking.......' as he was a true freshman. Not Hoobler, but Animal Jr. (Actually, wasn't D'andrea available also????).

A freshman can be a playmaker, when he's got two other LBs around him that will pick up the slack. Reference Katzenmoyer as a freshman. He was allowed to roam free and go for the QB, ONLY because he had two senior LBs on the outside positions that would (and could) cover for his roaming. They 'stayed at home' to protect against the slant, and to cover the gaps when Katz was bumped or blocked.

If Kerr was leading tackler for Indiana as a freshman (I believe he was), then it was because he was fast enough. But face it, Indiana does not have enough D, so no one has to go wide.......but he still got the job done.

Probably go by committee, to see which threesome 'gels' best together. And really, it doesn't matter who starts the game, but who the coaches have in there during crunch time......I'll bet Tress gives the seniors the start, but brings in Laurinitis and Freeman after a series or two. just a hunch.
