Stanley Cup Final: Wings vs. Pens

I think we'll be more competitive this year, but I still think the defense isn't nearly talented enough to beat the Wings. Too many turnovers, too slow getting to the puck. The forwards bring more intensity and a better cycle this year, but the defense is going to kill us.. Fleury has been pretty inconsistent too..

I'm rooting for jax's ND-UM meteor to make a guest appearance in this series.

My head says Wings in 6, but Pittsburgh is playing some damn good hockey right now....with the exception of Hal F. Gill.

Hopefully when the Wings are at home, and it wipes out about a 40 mile radius.

Detroit......Pittsburgh....whatever. That's a win-win in my mind. Either a large portion of Michigan is gone....or Tibor is.

Pitt is hot right now, but they'll have to be damn-near perfect to win 4 games against the murder's row that Detroit brings to the table.

I thought the salary cap was supposed to create parity? I think it would take the Eastern Conference All Stars to compete with the Red Wings.

Franzen and Zetterburg are not getting paid much this year (4.05 million combined). They signed extensions where the money will kick in next year, which means there is no way they will be able to sign Hossa again. Of course both of there contracts are over 10 years, meaning Detroit will open up cap space in the following years.

It also helps to have one of the cheapest veteran goalies in the league playing great right now.

Sure it will create parity, but when veterans like Hossa are willing to fit inside of a salary cap system which is set by the salary of the best player (Lidstrom), well it makes Wings fans like myself very happy.

As scott points out below, Ozzie came cheap. So did Brad Stuart and Ty Conklin. The best part about all of these vets still playing very well for .75 cents on the dollar is that the minors for the Wings (Helm, Abdelkader, Kopecky, Ericcson) are getting time to develop instead of being rushed to the top.

Yep.

its not "impossible" but id say improbable. they can swing it, certainly more easy if holmstrom pulls the plug on his na career.

the wings are really on the new cba included a buy out or repackaging of cap room (as are a few other clubs)>

I think Hossa is gone BTW. I think the Wings will be looking to get a grinder type forward.

And Andreas Lilja may be done too. Head injuries suck and his has kept him out of everything but light skating for nearly 3 full months now. It's league minimum (almost) and he eats a ton of minutes, but that's more cap room there. I think (hope) Homer goes out on top as does Draper but we'll see.

Kirk Maltby is done too and I think he realizes it too. He doesn't have the impact he had even 2 years ago anymore.

Sure the Pens are playing well, but they were last year, too and had to scrape and bust ass to win the 2 games they did. They would have to play damn near perfect to win.

Win or lose, it's still great to be in the SCF's again, especially considering where they were before the coaching change.

There's no excuse for having back to back games to start the series. Thanks Bettman.

Fuck off Balsille.

in fact, had last night been a game 7 I get the feeling Lidstrom would have played.

I think so, too. And I'm hoping the Wings win in 5 or 6, but knowing my luck we'll go to a game 7. If we do, I'll be arriving in Vegas that night and would probably miss most of the game. So, fingers crossed for a win in 5 or 6.
