What do you think about standing during the game?

  • You should not stand, its not courteous

Courtesy works both ways. It may be discourteous to stand up when the person behind you would rather be sitting, but that person telling you to "sit your ass down" hardly qualifies as courteous, either. I don't have a problem with someone asking me politely to sit down. As long as I can still see the game, I would probably sit back down or at least hunker down so that the other person can see. But if someone tells me what to do, I'm much less likely to do them any favors.

Personally, I would rather stand the whole game, regardless of situation, but there were definitely times at games where I would stand up screaming, look around, realize everyone else in the section was still sitting, and proceed to sit my ass back down.

On one occasion, a fellow behind me had no desire to stand up at any time except on very important plays, but rather than telling us to sit down, he asked me and the guy next to me to stand at angle so that he could see between us. We got to stand most of the game, he could still see, we were all happy.

Look, folks, we are all there rooting for Ohio State. It doesn't make any sense for us to waste our energy to stand/sit there in the stands bickering about whether or not we should be standing. Just use some common sense and try to put yourself in the other person's shoes before you tell them to sit down or tell them to fuck off.

That happens to me a lot. Holmes would catch a huge pass, or they'd get a great interception, and I'm up. Then I realize that I'm the only one standing, I'd feel guilty for bothering the people behind me, so I'd sit back down. But after that happens 4-5 times, I just think, "stand up if you can't see over me," and I don't feel so guilty.

My take is this: if you want to sit and watch the game, watch it on TV. Part of the at-game experience is being around people who are standing and cheering for their team.

I usually look at what the people around me are doing just as a courtesy but out at the National Title game in 02 the whole stadium stood the whole game and right before the game a guy and his family sitting behind me asked me if I could sit down, I said, "Buddy I've got 1700 miles to sit on my butt flying home, I'm not sitting down."

He stood the rest of the game.

All I can say is that the Shoe is not Muirfield Village and I will stand and jump and yell the whole game and don't care who likes it or who doesn't. Some people are acting like you should sit there with your legs crossed sipping tea and when the Bucks score there should be a calm golf clap. Fuck that!

You gotta stand and scream, it's called home field advantage. If you want to be quiet and sit on your ass go watch a Yanni concert. At The Game this year some middle-aged guy had a ticket right next to my buddies and I, and he looked so out of place. No Buckeye gear on, wasn't cheering, basically just sitting on his ass and couldnt have cared what happened. He was being a grouch about everyone around him standing and yelling. Then the best part...we score to tie the game up at 14 and everyone is jumping up and down and I get bumped a little while I am jumping in a drunken stupor and partially stepped on his foot. Then the prick punched me in the face. If it wouldnt have got me kicked out I would have decked the bastard, and I have thrown one punch in my life, not a brawler by any toss of the dime. I even politely told him that "I am sorry I stepped on your foot but it's a huge play in the best rivalry in sports, and I respect my elders, but your lucky I would get kicked out because you would have just got the shit knocked out of you". Then this ass hat leaves the game 3 minutes into the third quarter. If you are gonna be a douche stain, stay home and watch the game and let someone who is gonna be excited and enjoy the game have the ticket.

Exactly. It's a football game. You know it might be a little loud and rowdy before you even walk through the gates. If you don't want to deal with that environment, sit at home on your couch.

As of this posting, exactly 100 votes have been cast, and not one has been cast for "keep your ass down all game"...not a single vote. Over 3/4 say stand when you want.

If we get 81,000 of the 105,000+ fans to be on their feet for most of the game, Texas is in a world of shit...

77% - You should be able to stand and cheer if you want
23% - You should only stand for pivotal moments
00% - You should not stand, its not courteous

Okay, I just skimmed this thread so sorry for repeats, but here are my rules:

By seating type:

If you are in the student section you must stand all game.

If you are surrounded by old folks then you should stand at necessary points and exciting points.

Any other section, it is up to you when you stand. If you stand a lot and other don't seem to like it (behind you) try to be more infectious than annoying. Get them into it. . .

Absolutely necessary standing points:

3rd down on defense (or 4th and they go for it).
Red zone on defense - the whole time.
FG attempt on defense.

Exciting standing points, pretty much required too:
Ball in air on medium-long pass.
Ginn has ball.
Runner is breaking open.
Punt/kick return.

Overall, I could care less if people prefer to stand or sit, as long as they stand and wreak havoc on defense when needed. I am also happy to say that, in my experience, our fans are EXCELLENT at raising the noise level when the time is right. Does anyone remember how the NC State fans were so impressed by this? We have a duty to be a contributing 12th man. . .

I stand most all of the game. The most exceptions quarters, time-outs, and part of half time. Hell everybody stands for the band why not for the game and the team. I also yell the whole game. I don't care if it is first down or third I think that my voice can be heard and make a difference.I do make somewhat of an exception when I take my boy with me but I try to get him up and going also. If everybody just made themselves heard then the Shoe would be the best stadium to play in and shut all those damn sec fans up about the best atomsphere.

As a Buckeye fan it is not a right to attend these games... It is a privilege!!

My standard rant at games where my surroundings are lame...

"The game is on TV... If you want to sit on your hands go home to your coaches. Your team needs you, now make some noise!!"

Most people think I'm nuts, but a few start to feed off of it and it builds from there. I swear sometimes the Horseshoe is the most intense experience
('04 scUM) and sometimes it can be so lame ('04 PSU). I spent both of those games on my feet yelling. The problem was the PSU game I was yelling at my Buckeye brethren for being so lame.

I hope the buzz surrounding the program this year spills over to the casual fan and the stadium lives up to its potential every Sat.
I have no doubt Texas will be special.

As a current student at tOSU you can bet myself and everyone 3 sections on either side of me are on our feet cheering and yelling the whole game. The Bucks need us fans and we make the Shoe easily one of the top 5 nightmare away games for any team in the NCAA. I love seeing 0 votes for "You should not stand" as I feel that's totally BS and a waste of a ticket to any believer, but seeing as this poll is taken on BP I assume we got some great die-hards here voting

I like the idea of everyone in the entire stadium standing and yelling throughout the whole game, especially against Michigan and other big games (like Texas). But I don't think a BP poll is an accurate representation of the entire crowd at Ohio Stadium. A lot of people at a lot of games really do believe in the "I paid for this seat, and I'm going to use it" mentallity. I think that most people would rather sit than stand, and they only stand because the people in front of them are standing.

I also think that most people accept the fact that football excites most fans and that standing is a huge part of the experience at a football game. Who expects everyone to sit through the game? No one has ever asked me to sit down. I've never heard someone threaten someone to sit down or "I'll throw my drink on you."
