Stan Drayton press conference video and Q&A full transcript
Question: You mentioned learning from Jim Tressel how he protected his players, what did you mean by that?
Drayton: “Because he got in trouble for that, right? But the one thing about Jim Tressel is he’s never going to let any outside source, whether it be media or anything, whether the kid was right or wrong in his actions, he’s going to do everything in his power to protect his integrity, protect his character, protect his reputation. Because he always thought that, hey, kids will make mistakes, but they still have a future to live. And there are so many times where in this business that we’re in, a kid gets bad press, a kid gets a bad rep, and then their future, the growth gets stunted in that respect. So Jim Tressel did a phenomenal job of making sure that, hey, if a mistake is made, we’re going to learn from our mistakes, but I want you to know I still have your back, I still will support you in all good, bad, whatever it may be that you experience. While you’re here with me, I’ve got your back. And I really respect that about Jim Tressel.”
Question: How rewarding is it to get this job after you interviewed but didn’t get it in 2012?
Drayton: “It’s absolutely rewarding. To sit there and say I didn’t get it the first time, maybe I wasn’t ready, I wasn’t ready for it. And the worst thing in my opinion is to have an opportunity presented to you that you’re not ready for. So I took it as a learning experience. I wasn’t disappointed by it. I was actually encouraged by it. And I’ve always kept my eye on Temple, because they gave me a legit shot during the course of that process, that first process. Mr. (Bill) Bradshaw taught me a lot. He interviewed me. He told me what was right, what was wrong, and I took that and developed myself in that respect. And hey, it took a while, but now I have the opportunity that I know I’m ready for. And it’s because of those experiences that I attribute to that gives me an opportunity to say why I was ready, if that makes sense.”

Question: Have you been pursuing head coaching jobs for the past 10 years?
Drayton: “I have. I’ve been a part of probably four or five interviews. And they all have been great experiences, learning experiences for me. They prepared me for this moment, obviously. So yes I have been.”
Question: Was it both FBS and FCS jobs that you interviewed for?
Drayton: “Whatever, I just wanted to be a head football coach. I just wanted to lead men. FBS, Power 5, I’ve interviewed at them all. I really have.”
