2009 Spring Roster

The above link has all spring walk-ons and early enrollees listed.

Notable numbers:
J. Boren 56 --> 65
Adams 74 --> 75
Oliver 14 --> 20

Z. Boren 44
Klein 32
A. Homan 49
Mewhort 74
Wood 23
Jackson 15
Barnett 14

it's nice that they updated the jersey numbers but it looks like the heights and weights are exactly the same as last year

Just out of curiosity, can anybody think of a good reason to run the quarterback a lot in spring practice? The only advantage I can see is helping the line and RBs learn the zone-read (IF Coach T chooses to deploy it). If it's just designed runs...who cares? TP doesn't need a lot of practice running the ball. We already know he's pretty goddamn good at it.

I agree with this. Let him work on the stuff he needs to work on. Running comes naturally to him and he doesnt need the added risk of injury, especially in the spring

It helps the Defense in contain against a mobile QB. As we all know, if a D forgets about a mobile QB, it will get burned time and time again. So basically it makes the Defense play honest.

Spring Ball Will Be Different In 2009
By John Porentas

The one thing that we can pretty much tell you for certain is that almost none of those questions will be answered for certain during spring practice. The Buckeyes will get some ideas headed into fall camp, but as OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel explained, with the loss of 28 seniors and three juniors, the OSU coaching staff has a lot of evaluating to do, and it's not likely to get done quickly, as in spring ball.
...
The key concepts this spring will be experimentation and evaluation to determine the best personnel combinations.

"It probably won't be as locked in on either side of the ball as to who the ones are and who the twos are. You're going to see a lot of different groups playing together," said Tressel.

"I think you're going to see more combination this spring all along the board. Offensive line certainly, in the linebacker area where you replaced a lot of guys, out wide where you lost your two most experienced guys, I think you're going to see a lot of different lineups if you will."

What that all means is that if you are hoping to find out this spring who the starting corners will be, who the linebackers will be, and what new faces will be in the starting lineup, you are probably going to be disappointed. That report you saw that so-and-so was practicing with the ones is likely to be obsolete the next day when that same so-and-so is practicing with the twos or threes. The coaching staff will be moving players in and out of lineups this spring, so getting a handle on the two deep is going to be nearly impossible.

Cont'd ...

[Scratching head, scratching head...] What in the world sounds predatory about a group called the Frontliners (to the Big Ten, see StoicPaisano post above) The Committee sounds less so? LOL. :tongue2: But then, it was 1974. Who knew back then ?!

Go Bucks!

Just got back from football practice and interviews.

Practice was supposed to be open 20 minutes today but Jim Tressel said we could stay for the whole thing in honor of Dick Tressel's birthday. BTW, Dick said he was celebrating some aniversary of his 39th, but wouldn't elaborate.
Practice Notes:

Pryor's passing seemed very good on the long ball, but he still drops to sidearm or three-quarter arm when throwing short or intermediate. He did connect with Ray Small on a deep bomb during 11 on 11 drills.

Freshman Jamie Wood was dressed but did not participate in drills apparently due to some minor injury. He did work out on the sidelines with the strength coaches, but no contact.

Ditto Connor Smith, who had his left shin taped up.

Nathan Williams was not practicing but Zach Boren was. Boren had been listed as not available for spring ball.

Shugarts did agility drills and warmed up with the team, but no contact,
Keith Wells worked out on the sidelines but no contact.

Todd Denlinger worked out with the tight ends blocking during one on one drills, but played DT during 11 on 11.

Jake Stoneburner made some nice grabs. Looks like a weapon. Not afraid to stick his nose in there to block either.

Rob Rose appears much slimmmed down, maybe 15 to 20 pounds.

Scott Sika pancaked Willie Moblie during one on one drills. Nice block.

Kicker Rob Pettry delivered a big hit on Devon Torrence during return game drills. The hit drew ohs and ahs from the bench.

The guys working at the K.O. return position were Small, James Jackson, Torrence, Boom Herron, Brandon Saine and Lamaar Thomas.

The coaches are still very much mixing and matching at all positions so there is little to glean regarding the depth chart. Today however the first offensive line appeared to be Miller at left tackle, Boren at left guard,

Cordle at center, Browning at right guard and Brewster at right tackle. That will probably change often during the spring.

More later on the front page.
