The Weekender: Colorado and Syracuse Hope to Play Spring Game Against Each Other

Colorado, Syracuse pushing for spring scrimmage

While some college football teams are choosing not to play spring games this year, Colorado and Syracuse are hoping to start a new kind of spring game.
After Colorado coach Deion Sanders said Monday that he wanted the Buffaloes to play another team in their spring game, Syracuse coach Fran Brown responded to his call on social media, telling Sanders that he would bring his team to Boulder for three days to practice and scrimmage against the Orange.

Now, the two teams are taking real steps to try to make that happen. Syracuse.com reported Saturday that both teams’ compliance offices have filed paperwork with the NCAA petitioning for the opportunity to schedule joint practices and a scrimmage against each other in Boulder this spring.

NCAA rules currently prohibit teams from holding joint practices or intersquad scrimmages, and it’s unclear whether their petition will be approved. If it does come to fruition, however, college football coaches around the country will have one more option to consider when deciding whether their teams should hold spring games going forward.

Just sayin': Probably a bad idea. I do think that, an "intrasquad scrimmage" would lead to more injures. Besides you want to keep some of your practices and the plays that you run "secret".

Just a question, intrasquad scrimmages are done in the NFL. Why wouldn't it work in college?

I have no issue with the intrasquad scrimmages, its nothing more than a showcase for a lot of the backups anyway. We wouldn't see Jeremiah or Peoples out there for more than a series anyway. And not sure what "secrets" there would be to show when guys like: Aaron, Bryce West, Devin Sanchez, SWD, Bo Jackson, Mylan Graham, Bryson Rodgers, Dammarian Witten, etc are getting a bulk of the reps

Why NCAA Committee Denied Colorado, Syracuse's Request for Spring Game

Here's the reasoning behind the FBS oversight panel's denial.

The NCAA's FBS oversight committee on Friday denied a waiver request, filed last week by Colorado and Syracuse's football programs, that proposed a joint 11-on-11 spring scrimmage game, according to Chris Vannini of The Athletic.

The waiver request also proposed contact and non-contact practice sessions between the Buffaloes and Orange in the 2025 spring practice period. In an explanation of its denial obtained by Vannini, the NCAA listed two main areas of concern with the request:

"The timing of the request, noting most institutions have already planned their spring practice periods and some are at the end of, or have completed, their spring practice period," the NCAA said.

"The competitive and recruiting advantage gained by the applicant institutions if a waiver was approved to allow these institutions to engage in activities no other institutions are permitted to do. And the potential academic impact associated with student athletes missing class time to participate in spring activities."

However, the committee agreed to further discussions, in a future meeting, that could ultimately lead to joint spring practices in the future. The idea of a joint spring practice and game isn't new, but it quickly picked up steam again after Sanders floated a pro-style alternative to the current format while speaking to reporters last week.
