Spring Football - 2005 (mega-merge)

i would love to see pictures of the shoe over 1/2 filled of a spring game, actually I would be impressed if there were some pictures from years past where the stadium was even 1/2 full. Oh and what happens if i go vbroke?

Here's one from last year... btw... this is the "Empty side" the other side fills up faster for GA events so you don't have to see Script Ohio Upside down... btw, there about 10K to 15K people just in this shot, I would guess.

and with the ozone post another confirmation of the offensive line....i'm telling you....the attitude these guys have scares the bejeevies out of me just to be standing near them....swagger...
i wonder how much John Peterson has to do with this?......i don't remember seeing these types of glowing reports about our o-line before he arrived...........i can't tell you how excited i am to see if they can live up to the potential and hype they're creating, with all of that young talent and competition, we've all prayed for the day we have an o-line we can hang our hat on, hoping that day is around the corner

I am curious about 2 things:

1. Troy Smith seemed to have a good day on the ground. Exactly how good was it and how does that translate to the Texas game?

2. If the defense is basically handicapped in this matchup, how bad was the offense a few years ago when they lost?!

That one quote from earlier in this thread jumped out at me. Not for the obvious reason that Haw is going to bring huge speed into the backfield this year. Not in the context of the Jersey Scrimmage or the upcoming Spring game where we get to see how explosive this offense is against something closer to a number 1 D.

No not for any of the above do I quote that line. I quote Haw because of what his words tell us about Tressel.

Last year, the running game was in trouble -- we all saw that. Last year, Tressel patiently stayed with Ross, Pittman and Hall as the primary tailbacks and then adapted the gameplan with Brandon Joe once Ginn and Smith started to blossom.
Tressel patiently stuck to his guns and did not prematurely pull the trigger to bring Haw into the line-up, burning his red-shirt and throwing into confusion plans for the next 3-4 years.
Now think on this, how many coaches would give their left nut to have a back with Haw's speed available? A lot I think.
How many of those coaches would have resisted the urge to put Haw in right away, even before the season started -- to keep that young talent off the field of play so he might one day play to his fullest potential?
Some but not all, I am sure of that.
Now ask how many would be so steeled when their team seemed in dire need of a quick fix?
At least one, Jim Tressel, did that and we should be glad this year that he calls the shots for the team we all follow fanatically.
not to totally burst your Tressel love balloon, but there are a lot more factors that determine a RB seeing the field than his 40 time, and from all reports i've read Haw was redshirted because he needed the redshirt year from a maturity standpoint as much as anything, that he wasn't ready to contribute last year............and there were 4 capable TB's ahead of him on the depth chart, no reason to burn his RS...........i just don't see this as any sort of testament to Tressel's godliness, but a standard and logical move

As for JT, he made the right move, but the Iowa game would be a pretty strong argument for there being a dire need for Haw. I mean I guess the season was already going down the tubes, but it would have been tempting to try if he were an emotional coach (which thank goodness he's not, at least not in the negative sense of teh word).

As for JT and a high-octane offense, I think that is very possible. I never expect him to give up on the running game, I'm just curious if there will ever come a point where we will continue to use a good balance of running and passing to run out the clock. Up until now it seems like we've been incredibly transparent in calling mostly runs once we have a good lead... now that might change with the improvement in the OL and RB's.

um...well...there were 4 TB's ahead of him on the depth chart.

Just kidding!!! Please don't turn this into another Lydell Ross hatefest/lovefest...

I think that once the Bucks are up 2-3 touchdowns, Tressel seems perfectly willing to run-run-run-punt to take 3-4 minutes off the clock. I don't see him trying to pass more than once in that set of downs - it might mean that only 2 minutes tick away before the punt.

Let's not forget about those false start penalties. Those are a great way to keep the clock running, as long as you plan on punting anyway, or if you can take the game clock all the way to zero using it. I can't believe they haven't changed that rule yet - as long as the play clock was running, you get two periods of the play clock running down for only 1 down. Great strategy for running out the clock in tight game-end situations, but I don't think JT does it on purpose. :wink2:
