Spring Football - 2005 (mega-merge)

man this is good news. I'm glad to hear about Zwick playing well!! Also big props to Frost for staying healthy and doing very well! No surprise in Ginn's play, and I don't take this in a negative way at all (ok maybe jus a bit). However, our first team D didn't play as much as they should've so I'm sure it might be a bit different. I'm surpised nothing about Gonzo???

(Just think we didn't even have Holmes)

I love how it seems our o-line is just starting to click! Also I'd like to hear more about the running back position. Describe Haw's stretch play if you can...

On Defense we were without Kudla,Everett,D'Andrea, and limited with Schlegal. IMO alot of our very good Defensive football players didn't play or didn't play much today.

I hope that is the most shocking upset I experience all season because it certainly knocks my socks off.

Any "Fire Heacock" threads on BN yet?
I think we can be pretty sure that the D is going to be strong this year. I think it's a great sign that the O is able to put up points on them. A blowout win here and there would be nice for the old heart.

I've never understood the scoring of this game, and it sounds like not many people do. However, if the offense won last year, it's definitely safe to say that it's baised towards the O. That being said, it is reassuring that the O hammered the D. I'm not at all worried about the Buckeye D, so it's nice to see the offense apparently coming around. I'm ready for a JT team to start the year with a solid o-line.

I don't think we should be too worried about the defense. The lack of an edge rusher is a concern, but besides that I think our defense would have trouble slowing down the high-octane offense we are sporting now... especially if Carpenter and Hawk were gone quite a bit.

im not sure if its the angle or what, or even if that pic was taken today, but on the front page of bucknuts Ted Ginn def. looks bigger.
I agree, except I looked up archived stuff and this was a pic from the beginning of the 04 season (either that or before that, not sure which, but it wasn't a recent pic)

"After spring ball we'll run it. I'll try to hit that 4.2 area. My best is 4.21," Haw said.
That one quote from earlier in this thread jumped out at me. Not for the obvious reason that Haw is going to bring huge speed into the backfield this year. Not in the context of the Jersey Scrimmage or the upcoming Spring game where we get to see how explosive this offense is against something closer to a number 1 D.

No not for any of the above do I quote that line. I quote Haw because of what his words tell us about Tressel.

Last year, the running game was in trouble -- we all saw that. Last year, Tressel patiently stayed with Ross, Pittman and Hall as the primary tailbacks and then adapted the gameplan with Brandon Joe once Ginn and Smith started to blossom.
Tressel patiently stuck to his guns and did not prematurely pull the trigger to bring Haw into the line-up, burning his red-shirt and throwing into confusion plans for the next 3-4 years.
Now think on this, how many coaches would give their left nut to have a back with Haw's speed available? A lot I think.
How many of those coaches would have resisted the urge to put Haw in right away, even before the season started -- to keep that young talent off the field of play so he might one day play to his fullest potential?
Some but not all, I am sure of that.
Now ask how many would be so steeled when their team seemed in dire need of a quick fix?
At least one, Jim Tressel, did that and we should be glad this year that he calls the shots for the team we all follow fanatically.

I'm not necessarily arguing with you Sandgk, but I'm not convinced 40 times equates into RB ability. I know that's not exactly what you're saying, but I'm not jumping on the Haw-wagon just yet. Pittman looked good last year, he had the longest broad jump on the team this winter (so much for the out-of-shape crap), and he was equal to or better than Haw in the jersey scrimmage. I'm still betting the Pittman will be the starter.

I'd take 4.6 with excellent vision over 4.2 with average vision any day.

did kudla participate today? he isnt a dominant pass rusher, but he could definately provide help at the DE spot.

I also didn't hear anything about Roy Hall. Is he at WR, TE, or FB? Did he do anything?

I have to agree that reported 40 times are way overated. I will say however, that what got me on the band wagon was seeing Haw's high school vids. The guy is very fast and runs down hill. He also hits the hole like a truck. Personally I prefer fast, shorter, thick backs and he fits the bill.
-I think I found his vids from a link on the Vanilla Gorilla's site. He has a video link button on the top left if I remember corectly.
