A Number of Buckeyes to Sit Out Spring Drills, Others Returning to Action.
By John Porentas

Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel delivered what can be described as a "state of the team going into spring ball" statement earlier today. According to the Head Coach, a number of Buckeyes will miss spring drills, while others will be back after missing winter conditioning. Tressel also talked about the situation involving quarterback Troy Smith's suspension and reinstatement.

Senior Cornerback E. J. Underwood:

"E. J. Underwood this spring will not from an athletic standpoint be working with us. He'll be focusing on the academic end of things."

Junior Defensive lineman Brandon Maupin and freshman wide receiver Albert Dukes:

"Brandon Maupin and Albert Dukes had what are called ' missed term' exceptions from the standpoint that the weren't enrolled this winter and weren't working with us athletically.

"Brandon Maupin is back in school and participating fully in activities.

"Albert Dukes was also at home this winter quarter taking care of some legal responsibilities and has those responsibilities taken care of and is moving forward and is back in school and will be participating from an athletic standpoint. In both those cases we have some things we are working on but we anticipate they will be at full swing as we move forward.

Junior quarterback Troy Smith:

"Troy Smith's issue was solidified. Yesterday the NCAA called us and said that they would consider reinstatement as his restitution is paid, and also he will have one more game suspension, which is, as we listen and our compliance people tell us, is in step with case precedent in the past for violations of this kind.

"He'll take part in spring practice, as he has winter activities, and be ready to go once things are taken care of."

Freshman Defensive Tackle Caesar Buie:

"Caesar Buie. who missed all of last year, should have a gradual return."

Senior Linebacker Mike D'Andrea:

"Mike D'Andrea will spend most of the spring in non-contact, but should have some gradual return into some movement activities but will not have any full contact."

Senior Defensive Back Tyler Everett:

"Tyler Everett will have a gradual return into some movement activities but will start the spring with limited activity, and we don't think will end up with contact this spring."

Freshman Fullback Steve Fender

"Steve Fender, who missed all of last season, had to have another surgery and will be out all of this spring and will have no contact."

Senior Defensive Back Rob Harley

"Rob Harley, who had a surgery, will miss this spring from a contact standpoint."

Sophomore Tight End Jordan Hoewischer:

"Jordan Hoewischer at this moment has an injury such that he will not be participating."

Junior Wide Receiver Devon Jordan

"Devon Jordan, who missed the fall, will also miss the spring from a surgery standpoint and rehab."

Junior linebacker John Kerr and Senior Defensive Lineman Mike Kudla:

"John Kerr and Mike Kudla are in the same boat, have some post-surgery things that will not allow them to have contact."

Sophomore Wide Receiver Devon Lyons:

"Devon Lyons, who had a foot fracture in February, seems to be moving along a little faster than we thought he might and may have gradual return into activity. When we start things this spring he'll be working over with the medical squad, but we think he's going to come along."

Senior Linebacker Anthony Schlegel and Freshman Offensive Lineman Jon Skinner:

"Anthony Schlegel and Jon Skinner, both coming off surgeries, will have gradual return, but Anthony is going to have to make sure he doesn't try to make it too quick a return. He gets a little antsy."

Freshman Defensive Back Brandon Underwood: "Brandon Underwood, who had a surgery in December, will miss the spring from a contact standpoint."

Both are listed as redshirt sophmores on the offical website under the alphabetical roster but both are listed as freshmen when you click on their individual names...weird.

(moved this over as it fit this thread better)

One really cool tidbit of info I just received was that Holmes' is clearly considering the pros next year but says he'll make that decision when the time comes, and that for now Holmes' family is getting by just fine. I was afraid it was a money situation where he'd need to go pro somewhat soon, so that is mildly encouraging news.

Now, if we can get Ginn, Gonzo, Dukes and Lyons to all go nuts, Holmes will have less big plays and might have to wait a year to leave :) Ok, so the chances of Holmes not being amazing are about zilch with those other receivers as major threats, but one guy can dream. I just think he should wait until his senior year to have a breakout year to land him in the first round of the Draft.

Tressel has also said that Ginn will NOT become the next Gamble. He is strictly offense, and will see limited action on defense in the spring. He says the only thing that could change that would be injuries.

Looks as tho Mili was right

Another interesting thing to point out is that Tressel listed Dukes along with Ginn, Holmes and Gonzo when referring to the dangerous weapons at WR. That is an awesome sign and great work by a brilliant coach... it helps to reestablish him as a buckeye on the football team that is going to be explosive for us next year (rather than the non-enrolled red flag he's been in the past few months).

You can tell that Holmes is Buckeye to the core (see my signature pic if you have any doubts) and I think the decision for him to turn pro after this season won't be easy. But keep in mind he's a RS-junior (in other words an academic senior), so I think that no matter how much he loves being a Buckeye if he has a great season this year he should go ahead and declare "early"...he's earned it.

Buie graduated HS in the class of 2003, so he will be a RS sophomore, as medical redshirts are determined once normal eligibility is up.

Regarding the OSU website, the players' biography pages are changed once a year, usually early summer. If you look hard enough, you can find references to a Mr. Kennedy and Hiley.

It's a shame that Jordan wears his jersey with jeans and a hat more than the complete uniform.

I believe Fender is a redshirt frosh this year. next year on the depth chart that would make him a redshirt soph.
