In terms of a football related argument, I generally look at West Virginia and up.

The "south" is comprised of the same states that constituted the Confederate States during the Civil War. Those states would be:

Florida
Georgia
Alabama
Mississippi
Louisiana
Arkansas
Texas
Tennessee
South Carolina
North Carolina
Virginia

However, when the sports media refers to "southern speed", they are virtually always referring to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Wasn't Maryland also a Confederate state?

As much as I hate the southern speed crap. The fact is, Ohio State is the exception rather than the rule. The rest of the Big Ten is not "fast". The exception may be Penn State, but that has only been a recent development. The problem that I have with this argument, is that speed supposedly means that a team is better. I can't count the number of times that I saw a "fast" defense from FSU, LSU, Tennessee, Georgia, or Miami run the wrong way really fast. West Virginia used the Georgia defense in the first half of the Sugar Bowl this year with misdirection plays. Miami, the so-called, best defense in the country, got killed in the Peach Bowl this year. Their defense was constantly out of position.

Speed is a fun argument, but what the athletes with all this speed are actually doing with it is what really matters.

Every team has their 5-10 super fast kids. That's just how it is. In terms of speed, the "southern speed" thing is a big old myth. Anybody else remember AJ "4.5-40" Nicholson running a 4.94-40 at the NFL combine. Now, despite his 4.94-40 he's a great football player. 40 yard dash times are such a cliche and they are the most overblown thing in football. 40 yard dash times really don't matter all that much to be honest. They are fun to look at, but I'll take a AJ Nicholson and his 4.9-40 over 90% of the LB'ers in the NFL draft.
