Speed of Big10 vs. other conferences

Obviously I dont think anyone thinks this is indicative of his growth at this point in his career
Exactly. But to state that 11 games and over 140 pass attempts is nothing, well, OK. Then he should STFU because he doesn't know anything.

Right?

OK, I'll ask it straight out. Evidently, I am unable to grasp the subtleties of the correlation being made here.

How does the Ryan Mallett statement:

"There's definitely a lot more speed in the SEC than there is in the Big Ten"

get refuted by saying:

"Says he who has completed only 44% of his passes and has thrown as many TDs as interceptions against Big Ten teams."

If Ryan Mallett has simultaneously played, as a true freshman, in both the SEC and the Big Ten against similar opponents, and had significantly better stats in the SEC as he had in the Big Ten, I would be forced to concede that you might have an insignificant point.

Even so, team speed is not the determining factor in a quarterbacks completion percentage or TD/INT ratio.

If you were to say "Ryan Mallett didn't exactly light up the Big Ten as a true freshman backup", I have no problem with that, but to use it as a way to try and refute his statement comparing team speed in the SEC and Big Ten is clearly over reaching.

I believe he's saying if you are going to throw out his freshman year, then throw out the whole thing.

Personally I am more skeptical because bowl opponents ALWAYS think their ______ is better/faster than ______. I've never found kids/players to be a very good judge of that sort of thing.

It doesn't mean I believe his claim to be false, I just don't find the source to be very reliable.

I'm with SmoovP on this part of the discussion.

Yes I just wanted to clarify you or no one else was saying he is the same quarter back.

Im hoping this plays into our hands and they go into shock when they see that our front 7 move side line to side line as well as a good SEC team much like the self admitted 02 Canes did...Mike Tyson once said that he wanted his opponent to "feel him" and many times when they did he said
they were "gone spiritually"....this can be accomplished if we play with as much velocity and violence we can play with.... IMO I hope Mallett is saying this over and over again and it proves to be a suprise when it isnt true.

Maybe Ryan Mallett thinks SEC guys are faster because when he played in the Big 10 he was a true freshman...he had no fucking clue what he was doing back then. So he is comparing SEC players that he has played for 2 seasons against guys from 4 years ago when he didn't know wtf was going on...because he was an 18 year old kid.

You'd have a warped perception of B1G speed too if you spent every day of 2007 in Michigan's S&C program under Mike Gittleson.

Mallett saw the speed on display in Ann Arbor and must just assume everybody is that [strike]fast[/strike] slow.

You want to see Big 10 speed?

Line up the 4-wide and 5-wide sets in Camp Randall, Ann Arbor or Columbus in late November.

They don't work well.

There is a reason pro fields like Lambeau have a gawdy reputation for favoring the home team in the cold weather.

*If* there ever is a playoff in college, we'll start seeing how warm-weather schemes work in sub-freezing conditions. Somehow, I don't think we'll see teams with spread-heavy passing schemes do the kinds of things they are known for.

I like the spirit and the thought, but If Michigan and Michigan State had played their games in Chicago they'd have still gotten pounded.

Yep, and that group of plodders beat Percy Harvin and those speedy SEC Gators.
